Sanford Mainers News Release

Starting at 3pm on Tuesday night the Sanford Mainers and the Plymouth Pilgrims were looking at seventeen innings of baseball ahead of them as they had to finish an earlier suspended game from back on June 25 and a regular scheduled game at 6:30pm. The first game was suspended after only one inning and the Pilgrims took full advantage of the almost full game, shutting out the Mainers 13-0. The Mainers didn't let that discourage them going into game two as they were able to hold on to an 8-5 victory.

The start of game one featured many defensive changes for both teams including a new pitcher for the Mainers, Sam McKay. The Pilgrims were able to figure him out right away.

Vin Guglietti started off the second inning with a single to right. Ryan Stephens followed with a single of his own. McKay got Fratus on strikes, but then walked Jacob Robson to load the bases. On the very next play, Ryan Richardson hit a bloop single over Robert Wayman's head at second to force in Guglietti. Andrew Santomauro then walked forcing in Stephens to put the score at 2-0. Garrett Stubbs then reached on an error by Wayman allowing both Robson and Richardson to score.

Pilgrims starter Jeffery Springs was lights out. He was the original starter of the game and continued his outing in game one where he pitched all nine innings, giving up seven hits, walking five, and struck out eleven in the process.

The Pilgrims added to their lead again in the third when Daniel Fratus doubled to center scoring Guglietti and was followed later in the inning when Santomauro singled to right scoring Fratus and Robson. At that point it was 7-0.

The offense continued for the Pilgrims when they scored twice more in the seventh and in the eighth to put the score at 11-0, but they went to work again in the ninth. Blake Lacey doubled down the left field line scoring Robson and Santomauro. The game was way out of reach for the Mainers and they would have to focus on game two from that point forward.

In the second inning of game two, the Pilgrims started to mimic game one when they scored twice on a single to right by Adam Young and single to left by Robson.

The game looked to be much of the same as the first as Pilgrims starter Nick Fabrizio had the Mainers shut down through the first two innings, but the Moose weren't ready to throw in the towel that early in the game.

In the bottom of the third Sam Balzano hit an infield single down the first base line and was followed by Troy Black who hit an infield single of his own. Jake Thomas put down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners up a base. Cole Martin struck out for the second out of the inning, but Nic Wilson came up big, doubling down the left field line to score Balzano and Black to tie the game.

The Pilgrims took the lead again in the fifth when Guglietti doubled to left-center field scoring Stephens who reached second on an error by Wilson to start the inning. Guglietti was able to reach third in the fifth and then scored when Young hit a line drive up the middle, putting the Pilgrims up by two.

It was only a half inning later when the Mainers tied it up again when Thomas scored all the way from first on a double by Cole Martin. Martin advanced to third on the play and then came into score two batters later on and RBI single by Connor Castellano.

From that point forward the Mainers were determined to take control of the game and they did. Just an inning later Thomas reached a fielder's choice with one out, scoring Wayman who led off the inning with an infield single. Thomas then stole second and crossed the plate on a bloop single to left by Martin.

The Pilgrims made it interesting in the seventh when they cut the Mainers lead to 6-5 when Steven Patterson hit a sacrifice fly to deep left-center field allowing Bobby Melley to tag up from third.

Steven Rice came into the game in the ninth for the save situation and had a few insurance runs to work with after the Mainers plated two more in the eighth on a two-RBI single by Castellano.

With the split results the Mainers both fall and improve to 11-12 on the season. They will return home on Wednesday night to face the Newport Gulls for the first time this year. Conor Krauss is expected to make the start. Game time is scheduled for 6:30pm.
