Sanford Mainers News Release
LYNN, Ma. - It's not over till it's over.
For the second time in three games, Sanford rallied to tie the game in the ninth and won in extras. Grant Knipp (Campbell) was the hero in the tenth as he hit a two-run home run into the night to power the Mainers past the Navigators, 6-4.
North Shore struck first in the second inning on an RBI single from Charlie Taylor (Tennessee) that pushed Jake Bullard (Stetson) across. The next batter, Jack Penney (Notre Dame) scored on a sacrifice fly from Jarrett Ford (Dayton), 2-0.
In the top of the third, Sanford would respond with some two-out magic. Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) put the Mainers on the board with a single that drove in Jayson Kramer (St. John's). Hewett would then swipe second and score on the single from Knipp, 2-2.
During the bottom of the third, the Navs would go on top on a sacrifice fly from Penney would bring in Nathan Blasick (West Virginia), 3-2.
North Shore tacked on another run in the fifth on the double from Blasick off the top of the wall that brought Max Viera (Northeastern) in.
Some strong bullpen pitching from both sides kept the score as it was until the Mainers generated some more two-out magic.
In the ninth, NECBL Player of the Week, Quinn McDaniel (Maine) delivered with an RBI double that brought Kevin Skagerlind (UMass) home. Then, Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) proved why it's never over till the final out as his pop fly behind Ty Dooley (Radford) in fair territory, allowing McDaniel to score, 4-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, North Shore had a chance to end it with the bases loaded and one out, but Brian Craven (Davidson) worked around it to send it to extras.
Then, Knipp led off the 10th and launched a moonshot over the left-field fence to give the Mainers their first lead, 6-4. It was the Campbell Camel's second blast of the year.
Blake MacMillan (Niagra) came in for the bottom half and shut the door to give the Mainers their eighth win in the last nine games.
The Mainers return to Goodall Park tomorrow to face the top team in the league, the Vermont Mountaineers. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. with reigning NECBL Pitcher of the Week, Sonny Fauci (St. John's) expected to be on the mound.
These two squared off during the first week of the season for a doubleheader with the Mountaineers taking both games by a pair of runs.
