Mainers Lose Big against Vermont

SANFORD, Maine - One night removed from a five-run loss to Vermont, the Sanford Mainers fell to the Mountaineers again on Monday evening by a score of 14-5 to extend their losing streak to three.
The Mountaineers' offense got started right away with a single from Evan Fox (Stony Brook) on just the fourth pitch of the game from Noah Lewis (Maine).
Fox came around to score three batters later when Nathan Waugh (Cornell) came to the plate with runners on the corners after a Marshall Toole (Wofford) walk. Waugh took the first pitch he saw and sent it into the outfield giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
One pitch later, TJ Williams (Notre Dame) did the exact same thing, taking the first pitch that he saw in the contest and depositing it into the outfield to bring Toole around on a single.
In the second, the Mountaineers mounted another run on to their early lead as Jack Renwick (Wofford) singled to open the inning and a sacrifice bunt followed by a wild pitch had him standing on third base. Fox, who scored the game's opening run, drove in the shortstop for the third run of the contest with a sacrifice fly.
Nick Roselli (Binghamton) opened the bottom of second with a leadoff double before Cam Johnson (UNC Asheville) put a ball in play that got him to second base on an error by Renwick and allowed Roselli to touch home plate for Sanford's first run.
Johnson was pushed to third on a sacrifice bunt that allowed a Devin Russell (Maryland) groundout in the next at-bat to bring him home.
With the deficit under control, Lewis returned to the mound for the top of the third but could not keep his team trailing by just one for very long.
Waugh hit a solo homerun to double the Mountaineers lead to two, and one-inning later Santino Rosso (Hofstra) followed suit with a home run of his, which also plated Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) and Luke Cantwell (Pittsburgh), as Vermont went ahead 7-2.
The Mountaineer hitters took a different approach in the fifth, but it still proved enough to score another run. Williams, Renwick and Cox all remained patient and worked walks off Connor Caverly (Springfield) to load the bases.
Fox stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and Caverly fought back after falling behind in the count, but it was Fox getting the best of the righty on the mound, working the Mountaineers' fourth walk of the inning to drive in Williams.
The Mainers got that run back in the bottom of the frame as Matt Miceli (Stony Brook) lined a single to right field before stealing second and third base to put himself in position to score on a wild pitch by Max Parker (Le Moyne).
Vermont sealed the fate of the contest a half-inning later as an RBI single by Williams, a wild pitch and a double steal, which included one of home plate, allowed Rosso, Waugh and Williams to add three tallies to the scoreboard and put the Mountaineers ahead 11-3.
Miceli helped plate another run for the Mainers in the bottom of the seventh after Michael Simes (UMass Lowell) pitched the first scoreless inning for the Sanford staff. Miceli reached base on a single that allowed him to reach second on a throwing error.
JD Rogers (Vanderbilt) drove Miceli around to score on a single and rounded the bases on a wild pitch, stolen base and throwing error by the catcher Waugh as the Mainers struck for two making it an 11-5 ballgame.
With the game all but over, Vermont struck for three more as Fox recorded an RBI double and Nate Stocum (Western Carolina) sent one final ball over the wall with a no-doubt home run to put the Mountaineers ahead 14-5.
The Mainers are on the road for their next six games though during the first game of tomorrow's doubleheader in Danbury they will be the home team.
