Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SANFORD, MAINE - The Vermont Mountaineers offense struck again for the second straight night, downing the Sanford Mainers 14-5, on Monday night from Goodall Park. With the win, the Mountaineers improved to 7-3 on the season and moved into a first-place tie with the Upper Valley Nighthawks in the North Division. The Mainers fell to 3-6 on the year.

Vermont jumped right back into the offensive showcase from last night, by scoring two runs in the first inning. Evan Fox (Stony Brook) led off with a single, before stealing two bases. He scored on a single down the third base line off the bat of TJ Williams (Notre Dame). Nathan Waugh(Cornell) had a two out single that drove in Marshall Toole(Wofford), making it 2-0 Vermont.

Vermont's Aidan Tucker(Tufts)started things off well on the mound, only facing one over the minimum to start the first inning.

Vermont continued to produce early offense in the second as Jack Renwick(Wofford) singled to start the inning and would come around to score the third run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field by Fox.

Sanford would find their bearings in the second, scoring two runs and cutting the early Vermont lead to one. Nicholas Roselli led off with a double for the Mainers and would come around to score on an error by Renwick on his throw to first base.

Waugh decided to let the Sanford crowd see his power in the third with a two out home run that traveled 389 ft and came off the bat at a screaming 104 mph, giving Vermont a 4-2 lead.

A pickoff at second from Tucker and some great defense by Vermont sent Sanford back to the dugout with nothing to speak of in the third.

Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) reached on an error and a Luke Cantwell (Pittsburgh) walk made for an exploding three run home run off the bat ofSantino Rosso(Hofstra) that traveled 366 ft and got there quickly leaving the bat at 94 mph. The three run blast from Rosso gave the Mountaineers a 7-2 advantage heading to the bottom of the fourth.

Both Vermont and Sanford would each tack on one run in the fifth making it a 8-3 ball game in favor of Vermont. Sanfords run came almost entirely thanks to some impressive hitting and base running by Mainers, Matthew Miceli who singled, stole second and third, before trotting home on a passed ball.

Sanford scored two runs in the seventh to come within 11-5. However Vermont got three runs back in the ninth, with the big blow coming with Nate Stocum (Western Carolina) blasting a two-run home run to make it 14-5.

Tucker would exit the ball game after going five innings, giving up three runs on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Vermont would rely on bullpen arms for the rest of the game, as Andrew DAlessio(Princeton), Max Parker(Le Moyne), andBrian Foley(UMass Lowell) all combined for just three runs over four innings. Brendan McFall (Northeastern) came in the ninth to close the door.

The Mountaineers return home tomorrow, June 20th against the Bristol Blues. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game is sponsored by Froggy 104.3 and 100.9.
