Sanford Mainers News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Representing the Sanford Mainers Sunday afternoon in the NECBL's home run derby will be Shaine Hughes (Monmouth), not Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) as previously announced.

For the Mainers this season, Hughes is hitting .280 with 11 RBIs, and two home runs. Hughes is in his second summer as a Sanford Mainer and was the team's fan vote nominee for inclusion in the All-Star game.

A consistent part of Monmouth's offensive attack this spring, Hughes led the Hawks with a .385 batting average and 15 doubles. His offensive prowess didn't stop there, as the junior had a .522 slugging percentage and .457 on-base percentage in 2016.

Hughes had an impressive 2015 NECBL season with Sanford, hitting .305 in 36 games. Primarily played at third base, the infielder ranked second on the Mainers with 40 hits and third on the Mainers in RBIs with 18.

The home run derby begins at 2:30 PM, and will consist of three rounds, concluding at roughly 3:30 PM.
