New Bedford Bay Sox have their most dramatic and downright crazy win

New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The New Bedford Bay Sox waited for the last game of the first half of their season to have their most dramatic and downright crazy win of the season.

Fairhaven's Ryan Baldwin (Barry) scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a wild pitch, after one of the wildest double plays ever witnessed, as New Bedford defeated Ocean State 4-3 to move into fourth place in the Southern Division.

The Bay Sox loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th on a walk to Robbie Doring (Dayton), a hit batter (Baldwin) and a bunt single by Chandler Debrosse (Central Connecticut State). Speedy outfielder T.J. Dixon (Samford) was poised to be the hero, but he grounded into a controversial double play that had both dugouts confused. Dixon took an inside pitch and acted like he was struck by it, which would have brought the winning run home, but the umpires ruled that the ball hit the knob of the bat and landed in fair territory. The Waves tagged home for the force out, then through down to first base to get Dixon with the second out. They actually made another throw home and thought they had turned an inning-ending triple play, but after a meeting of the minds, the umpires ruled it was a 1-2-3 double play. After Danny DiMare (Santa Fe CC) drew a walk, Baldwin came home on the wild pitch to move the Bay Sox into playoff position.

The Bay Sox took the early lead in the second inning, as they scratched across a run on three hits. With one out, Baldwin singled on a flare that landed just over the head of Waves' third baseman Dean Lockery. Debrosse laced a single to center field, which moved Baldwin up one base. After a fly out by Dixon, recent addition DiMare blooped a single to center field to pick up his first RBI in his third game (second start) with the Bay Sox. Ted Shaw (Sacred Heart) flied out to center field two batters later with the bases loaded to end the scoring threat, as New Bedford could only yield just one run on four baserunners in the inning.

The visitors took advantage of a leadoff walk and a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Starter P.J. Poulin Jr. (UConn) retired the next two batters via fly outs to the outfield, but with two down first baseman Austin Upshaw found a spot between Debrosse and Dixon in shallow left center field for his own bloop single to drive in a run.

Poulin was outstanding in his second start of the year, allowing just two hits and one run over six innings of work. His offense had chances to take the lead in the fourth and fifth, as Baldwin struck a leadoff double to deep center in the fourth but was stranded at second base, and the Sox stranded two runners in the fifth as Ryan Wolfsberg (Hamilton) and Jakob Goldfarb (Oregon) reached with two outs. Poulin did surrender four walks, but looked strong throughout his outing, striking out two while getting 10 fly outs and six ground outs.

The Bay Sox scored a run in the sixth inning to retake the lead in prompt fashion, with Debrosse drawing a one-out walk, stealing second base, traveling to third on an error on the throw by catcher David Real, and scoring on a balk from pitcher George Capen. Capen was then immediately tossed by the field umpire who called the balk, as the Ocean State reliever followed the ump across the infield for some clarification on the run-scoring call.

Daniel Southerland (Wheaton) was the first man out of the bullpen for New Bedford, starting the seventh inning with the Bay Sox holding a 2-1 advantage. He gave up back-to-back singles, then got the first out of the inning on a sacrifice bunt to place two Waves in scoring position for All-Star shortstop Grant Williams, who drove in the tying run with a ground out to short. Matthew Leon (Seton Hall) relieved Southerland after he allowed a two-out walk, and he prompted allowed a single to Upshaw to give the Waves their first lead of the game, which was short-lived.

Andrew Penner (Los Angeles Valley) reached for the third time to lead off the bottom of the seventh on the third error of the game for Williams at short. Penner moved to third on a double to right center by Wolfsberg, who should have been thrown out at second base but no one was covering the bag in a defensive lapse by the Waves. Penner scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Goldfarb, as the Oregonian picked up his 14th RBI in just 22 games with New Bedford.

Leon pitched a clean eighth inning, which included two strikeouts, and the Sox had a shot at taking the lead in the bottom of the frame. Debrosse and Dixon drew back-to-back walks with one down, with Debrosse picking up his second stolen base of the game (eighth of the season) as well. DiMare hit a potential double-play ball but hustled to beat the throw to first, but Debrosse was gunned down at home trying to sneak in the back door during the 6-4-3 DP attempt.

After Sunday's All-Star Game, which will have four Bay Sox players in the game (Wolfsberg, Penner, Sam Nepiarsky and Darrien Ragins), and two more in the skills competition (Baldwin and Dixon), New Bedford will next play at home in a makeup game with the Newport Gulls on Monday evening at Paul Walsh Field.
