Sanford Mainers News Release
Sanford - The Sanford Mainers went on the road for the 4th of July to North Adams where they fell by a final 4-1 after matching the Steeplecats in hits but just couldn't find the run production they needed. Despite hitting the ball hard with runners on base, the ball just found its way right into North Adams' gloves.
North Adams jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the 1st as they were able to bring a run home on two hits as they took a 1-0 lead, one that would stay the same until the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th the Steeplecats would add two more runs on three hits to extend their lead to 3-0.
The Mainers threatened to score a couple of their own in the top of the 6th as Nick Howie (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Eastern Kentucky) and Jake Alu (Hamilton, N.J./Boston College) ripped back to back singles and were moved to second and third with just one out on a beautiful sacrifice bunt by Carmine Pagano (McLeansville, N.C./UNC-Asheville) but were unable to come around as the Steeplecats escaped the inning. Howie and Alu stayed hot at the top of the lineup, even with the Moose falling in this one, as they accounted for five of the seven hits the Mainers were able to tally on the night.
The bullpen for the Mainers was strong as usual as despite a run that came across in the bottom of the 6th on two passed balls. Kyle Skidmore (Franklin, Mass./Hofstra), Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Southern Maine), and John Murphy (Merchantville, N.J./Maryland) combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit and keeping the score where it was as they needed their bats to come alive in the final two innings.
In the top of the 8th the Moose were able to get one back on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Johnny Rizer (Cypress, Texas/Texas Christian University) that scored Nick Howie who had doubled earlier in the inning. This cut the lead to 4-1 as the game progressed into the 9th and it was last call for the Mainers' bats. Unfortunately, Sanford wasn't able to come up with a run even with the single by Conner Shepherd (Upland, Calif./Texas Christian University) to lead off the inning as they fell to the Steeplecats for the third time this season.
Sanford gets another day off on Thursday before heading back on the road for two straight to round out the week on Friday and Saturday as they will visit both Vermont and North Adams once again. You can tune in to the game on Friday as the 2nd place Moose head to Montpelier on the NECBL Broadcast Network or 102.3 FM "The Legends" in Sanford.
