Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, VT - The Upper Valley Nighthawks used the bottom of their lineup to score five of their seven runs, as they cruised past Vermont 7-3 Wednesday night.
It was a quick start for Upper Valley, scoring one in the first, four in the second, and another in the third. The big second inning came courtesy of the bottom of their order, as they 7-8-9 batters stringed together three straight doubles to give them a 5-0 lead. In his first game as a Nighthawk, Austin Wilhite (Budford, GA/ Georgia Tech) laced a double into right center, driving in two runs. Wilhite would add an RBI on a sac fly in the third, giving Upper Valley the 6-0 lead.
Vermont starter Ross Mintzer (Wyndmoor, PA/ Lock Haven) only lasted an inning and two thirds, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits, while walking three and striking out four. The win for Upper Valley went to Stephen Hansen (Manalapan, NJ/ Iona), who threw two innings out of the pen, allowing no baserunners and striking out one.
The only Mountaineers offense came in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan). With the bases loaded, he doubled off the wall in right field, scoring two runs.
The Mountaineers (6-16) have a day off Thursday, and will come back to Montpelier Friday when they host Sanford (12-9). Vermont trails first place Valley (15-5) by 10 games now. The first pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 6:30, and can heard on CBS Sports Radio 1240, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
