Sanford Mainers News Release
KEENE, Nh. - After a dominant pitching performance last night, the Mainers struggled to silence Keene's offense en route to an Independence Day Eve loss, 10-6.
The first two and a half innings were scoreless, but the fireworks began for the Swamp Bats in the third.
Lucas Costello (Wake Forest) hit an RBI single that scored Tyler McKenzie (Vanderbilt). Later, Costello would score on the single off Carter Mathison's (Indiana) bat, 2-0.
Sanford would respond in the fourth, as Joey Rezek ripped a single that drove in a pair, Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) and Aidan Kane (Delaware). Then with the bases loaded a single by Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) pushed Devan Bade (Binghamton), 3-2.
The Mainers threatened in the fifth, but it was Keene to swing the momentum in their favor in the bottom half.
Mathison continued to build off his strong night driving in Costello and James Broderick (Wake Forest), 4-3.
An inning later, Keene extended the lead to three as Costello picked up a pair of RBIs on his single that allowed Caleb Pendleton (Florida Atlantic) and McKenzie to score, 6-3.
Just like in the third, the Moose fought back to tie the game. Kane would first walk with the bases loaded, bringing in David Bermudez (Manhattan). Then, with two-outs, Bade delivered with a two-out two-RBI single scoring Grant Knipp (Campbell) and Hewett, 6-6.
It would take just one knock for Keene to get on top again, as Jackson Ross (Florida Atlantic) went deep for the seventh time this year, 7-6.
Another three runs in the eighth gave the Swamp Bats the cushion they needed to cruise the rest of the way. Parker Murphy (Jacksonville) ended a late rally from Sanford with the bases juiced.
The Mainers enjoy a brief Fourth of July break before being back in action on Wednesday when Keene comes to town. Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) will be on the mound with the first pitch coming at 6:30 p.m. from Goodall Park.
