Mainers Drop Offensive Battle to Martha's Vineyard

July 10, 2022 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD, Me. - Looking to start Family Weekend on the right foot, Sanford welcomed the Martha's Vineyard Sharks to Goodall Park. However, it would be the Sharks to get the last laugh in a back-and-forth affair, 8-6.

Sanford started the game on the right foot, scoring the first run. After a pair of stolen bases, Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) came in on a sacrifice fly from Aidan Kane (Delaware), 1-0.

After a strong start for Sonny Fauci (St. John's), Martha's Vineyard delivered with a two-out rally. First, a Marcus Franco (Nova Southeastern) single drove in Harrison Brown (Austin Peay) and Michael Synder (Washington). Then, Logan Chambers (Tennessee) singled to score Franco, 3-1.

The Mainers would strike back on as Jake Rainess (Maine) notched an RBI single bringing in Grant Knipp (Campbell), 3-2.

In the fifth, the Sharks went up by a pair on the single from Synder that scored Thomas Bramley (Undecided), 4-2.

Then in the bottom half, the Moose would cut back into the lead on the solo home run from Hewett on the first pitch of the inning, 4-3. It was Hewett's second straight game with a round-tripper.

The sixth went by unchanged until the offenses came back out in the seventh.

It looked like the Vineyard had broken things wide open after Ryan Nicholson (Cincinnati) launched a 3-run homer around 400 feet down the right-field line, 7-3. It was his first home run of the season.

Like they had done in the last innings, Sanford would respond with a three-run inning of their own. With two outs, Kane drove in Hewett again on a single. Moments later, Knipp would smoke one into the left-centerfield gap scoring Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) and Kane, 7-6.

However, the green and yellow were never able to overcome the one-run deficit. A sacrifice fly by Dorian Gonzalez (Miami) put the Sharks up by a pair.

Despite getting two runners on, there was no magic left in Sanford as they fell in this one.

The loss drops the Mainers to 12-15, as they try and make a push for a wildcard spot, while Vineyard improves to 15-11.

The Mainers will look to bounce back on Sunday against the Danbury Westerners. Bryce Afthim (Southern Maine) is getting the nod, with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.

These two last faced each other during the first week of the season with Danbury taking it, 6-3 at Rogers Park.
