Sanford Mainers News Release
The right things were happening at the right time for the Mainers. Winning a one game play-in on Saturday night against the Laconia Muskrats to put themselves into the playoffs had signs pointing in the right direction, but on Sunday the Newport Gulls put a halt to that, defeating the Mainers 11-4 in game one of a best of three series in the first round.
The story of the game was Gulls starter Brett Graves who pitched 6.2 innings, giving up only two hits and four runs, none of which were earned. He walked only three and struck out a career high ten batters. Both hits came in the seventh inning after no-hitting the Mainers through the first six.
It didn t take long for the Gulls to get on the board. In the bottom of the second inning, Ben Roberts led off with a single to center and then advanced to second on a one out walk issued to Timmy Robinson. Brett Winger singled to left allowing Roberts to score the first run. With runners at the corners and only one out, Ethan Ferreira singled up the middle scoring Robinson. Cody Jones helped his team load the bases by getting hit by a pitch. Shea Donlin added to the hit parade by hitting a single of his own to center plating both Winger and Ferreira to put the Gulls up 4-0.
Just an inning later Newport extended their lead once more when both Roberts and Robinson collected RBI doubles to make it 6-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, they went at it again, scoring four more times to blow open the lead 10-0. Back-to-back walks issued to Steve Anderson and Robinson started the inning. David D Errico came into the game for Mainers starter James Bourque and gave up a one out walk to load the bases. Jones doubled to the gap in right to score Anderson and Robinson. Donlin followed with a seeing-eye-single to right pushing in both Ferreira and Jones.
The Mainers were able to spark some life in the top of the seventh plating four runs of their own. Nic Wilson broke up the no hitter with a ground ball through the right side. Anthony Papio followed with a walk.
Cole Martin who made his first start since being injured two weeks ago singled to right scoring Wilson for their first run. Billy Bereszniewicz reached on a fielder s choice in which the play at second was not in time keeping everyone safe on the base paths. Papio scored in the process. Troy Black and Sam Balzano both collected two out singles allowing Martin and Bereszniewicz to score.
That s all the runs the Mainers were able to get. The Gulls scored one more time in the bottom half to make it 11-4. In the top of the ninth, the Mainers put two runners on, but let them stranded.
With game one going to the Gulls, the Mainers return home to Goodall Park on Monday in hopes to force a game three and keep their playoff run alive. Evan Hill will take to the bump for the Moose, throwing first pitch around 6:30pm.
