Mainers' Bats Rock Swamp Bats

July 26, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

KEENE, N.H. - Four runs in the 1st inning and an additional three in the 2nd made sure the Keene Swamp Bats (16-23) never caught up to the division-leading *Sanford Mainers (23-14) *in their 10-3 win Tuesday night.

Sanford's four-spot formed quickly, as *Johnny Slater (Michigan) *led-off the game with a single, with *Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) *and *Todd Czinege (Villanova) *joining him aboard with a walk and single respectively. *Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) *grounded out to bring the first run, before *Chris Gaetano's (Monmouth)* three-run home run to make it 4-0 early.

After Keene grabbed two in the bottom of the 1st, the Mainers promptly responded with three more. Sanford loaded the bases on three consecutive batters in the frame when *Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) *and *Kyle Heath (Southern Maine) *were both hit by a pitch and Slater joined them aboard with a single. *Zach Jancarski (Maryland) *singled in a run, which was followed by a fielder's choice to knock in another. Czinege hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the 7th run, making it an early and insurmountable Mainers lead.

Swamp Bats' starter Mike Crimi (Keene State) was shelled in just three-and-two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits to the tune of 10 runs, 10 earned, with two walks and no strike outs.

Sanford tacked on three more in the 4th when Hughes drove in a run on a double play ball and was followed by a Czinege RBI-single and a Landestoy RBI-double to give the Mainers their final total. Keene added one in the 8th to get their third run of the night.

Mainers starter *Cole Whitney (St. John's) *was great in his second start of the season from Alumni Field, working through five innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, two earned, a walk in addition to six strike outs.

Despite two errors, the Mainers helped themselves out through some excellent defensive plays. Sanford turned a 5-4-3 double play to get out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th, but the golden standard was set by the center fielder Jancarski. The Maryland Terrapin robbed Patrick Sullivan (Georgia) of what would have been a two-run home run with a leaping grab, and stole an extra-base hit from Aubrey McCarty (Florida A&M) as he crashed into the outfield fence. Both stunning catches ended Keene's respective innings, in the 5th and the 7th.

Sanford will resume play July 27 when they play host to the Upper Valley Nighthawks for the third time this season. Upper Valley has taken both contests in Sanford, while the Mainers have taken both contests in White River Junction for an even 2-2 season split. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM, and coverage can be found beginning at 6:20 PM on the NECBL Broadcast
