SteepleCats Calm the Waves

North Adams SteepleCats News Release

Setting the tone, taking the early lead, and not looking back have been habits for the North Adams SteepleCats over the last couple of days. It continued on Monday night in a 9-4 victory over the Ocean State Waves at Joe Wolfe Field. It was the SteepleCats third straight win and it improved them to 21-18 on the season.

"Yesterday was a great day for us but it does not mean anything if we go out and waste it with a poor effort today," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong. "That is kind of the theme for the end of the season in that yesterday does not matter without today and that is what we told them again tonight."

Daniel Holst led off the bottom of the first with a single. Dustin Shirley followed with a double scoring Holst. Shirley advanced to third on a bunt single by Easton Johnson. Edward Haus doubled home Shirley to make it 2-0. With two outs and runners on second and third, Kyle Brennan hit a two run single to give the 'Cats a 4-0 lead.

The big first inning gave 'Cats starter Jack Rupe a lot of momentum to work with. He went four innings in his first start of the season. He struck out two and allowed one run off of three hits. At one point, he retired eight hitters in a row.

"I just try to be more in control of the game from the start," said Rupe. "Being able to start the game saying 'this is my game' is pretty fun to do."

The 'Cats offense continued to pour it on adding two more runs in the second, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth to build a 9-1 lead. The Waves have had a tendency to put up big innings offensively but the 'Cats were not going to let that happen.

"After you score you want to throw up a zero for the other team," said Coach Armstrong. "That is the most important thing. We did that a lot tonight. We did not let them off the hook."

The victory got the SteepleCats closer to clinching a spot in the NECBL Playoffs.

"Fun time of the year, exciting time of the year, and this is when you want it all to come together," said Coach Armstrong. "If the guys keep coming out with the intensity, the energy, and the want to win, I think we are going to be in really good shape."
