Lewiston, ME - Lewiston MAINEiacs ended Moncton Wildcats winning streak at 14 games on Tuesday as they posted a 3 - 2 shootout victory before 2,002 at the Coliseé. Moncton's winning streak was the longest in the League this season and set a new team record. In the contest, Moncton grabbed a early two goal lead, as Stephane Goulet (39th) and Nathan Welton (8th) both connected on the powerplay in the first period. Martins Karsums and Philippe Dupuis assisted on Goulet's marker, while Brad Marchand and Luc Bourdon set up Welton's tally. Before the period ended, Marc-André Cliché cut the Wildcats lead in half with his 21st of the year, also on the powerplay. In the second period, Ãric Castonguay scored another powerplay marker, his 21st, to deadlock the contest. The teams battled through a scoreless third period and five-minute sudden-death overtime. In the shootout, Jonathan Bernier stopped the first four Moncton shooters he faced, while Josh Tordjman turned back the first three shooters, before surrendering Jonathan Paiement's game winner. In all, Moncton went 2 for 6 on the powerplay and the MAINEiacs were 2 for 12. Lewsiton outshot Moncton 39 - 33, including 10 - 7 in the third and 7 - 2 in the overtime. Moncton held a 10 - 8 advantage in the second and the teams had 14 shots apiece in the opening period. Bernier evened his season record at 20 - 20, while Tordjman's record fell to 24 - 18.
The game's three stars were #1 - Brandon Roach, #2 - Jonathan Bernier and #3 - Stephane Goulet. Moncton falls to second place in the League, one point behind the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, with a record of 38 - 10 - 0 - 3 = 79 pts. Lewiston improves their record to 26 - 17 - 3 - 6 = 61 pts. and moves into a tie for fifth place in the East Division with the Halifax Mooseheads. Moncton returns to action on Friday, February 10th when they will host the Saint John Sea Dogs in a 7 pm contest at the Moncton Coliseum.
Media Advisory: Moncton Wildcats have re-scheduled a home-to-home series with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, due to a scheduling conflict at the Moncton Coliseum. Moncton will now host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Tuesday, February 28th at 7:00 pm. Moncton will then travel to Acadie-Bathurst on Friday, March 3rd for a 7:30 pm match-up at the K.C. Irving Regional Center.
