Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (18-22) took the first game in their series with the St. Paul Saints (24-16) by getting out to a big 8-0 lead and holding on for a 9-5 win on Thursday night at Midway Stadium.
The Canaries took the lead in the top of the first inning. Cameron Coughlan singled and advanced to third on a single by Casey Gordon. Orlando Miller hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Coughlan and give the Canaries an early, 1-0 lead.
The Birds widened their lead in the second inning. Juan Figueroa singled and Matt Imwalle followed with a sacrifice bunt. Figueroa went to second on the bunt, and Imwalle reached when Saints third baseman Ben Thomas misplayed the ball. Tim Marks added a single to score Figueroa for a 2-0 lead. Coughlan made it back-to-back RBI singles by plating Imwalle, and the Canaries led by three, 3-0. With runners on first and second, Gordon laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. Miller followed with a single to score both Marks and Coughlan. After an inning and a half, the Birds were ahead, 5-0.
The Canaries added three more in the fourth. Marks led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Marks came around to score on a single by Coughlan, giving the Birds a 6-0 advantage. After Orlando Miller singled to put runners on first and second, Ben Van Iderstine flew to centerfield, and Abner Arroyo came to the plate with two on and two out. Arroyo hit a high fly down the left-field line that was dropped by Saints left fielder Brian Sprout. Coughlan and Miller scored on the error to give the Birds an 8-0 lead after three and a half innings.
St. Paul got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kevin Sullivan started the inning with a single. Sullivan went to third when Skip Adams fly ball to centerfield was dropped by James Shanks. Sullivan then scored on an error by Orlando Miller. The unearned run put the Saints in the run column, and after five innings the Birds led 8-1.
The Canaries got the tally back in the sixth inning. Marks singled and advanced to third on a double by Coughlan. Miller added his second sacrifice fly of the night to bring home Marks and give the Canaries a 9-1 lead.
The Saints got four back in the seventh. With two on base, Derrick White hit his second homer of the season to pull St. Paul within five, 9-4. The Saints got one more in the inning when Marcel Longmire singled, went to second on a walk to Fernando Valenzuela, Jr., took third on a flyout by Brian Sprout, and scored on a groundout by Ben Thomas. After seven full innings, the Canaries were ahead 9-5. They would hold on for the final two innings in the 9-5 victory.
Pat Mahomes (11-3) became the second Canaries pitcher in club history to win 11 games in one season, and will have a chance to tie the Canaries club record with a potential 12th win in his final start of the year on Wednesday night. The Canaries record for wins in a season is held by Scott Martin, who won 12 games in 2001. Brian Whinnery (6-5) took the loss for St. Paul.
The Canaries will continue their series in St. Paul on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds will return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Monday, August 20 for NASCAR night presented by Alltel Wireless.
