St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 16, 2007) - All the good feelings from a three game road sweep of the Sioux City Explorers vanished in one night as the St. Paul Saints lost 9-5 to the Sioux Falls Canaries on Thursday night at Midway Stadium in front of 7,235.

The Saints, who have now lost five in a row at home, were blasted right out of the gates. The Canaries got on the board in the first when Cameron Coughlan singled to right. He would finish the night 4-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Coughlan moved to third on a single by Casey Gordan and scored on a sacrifice fly by Orlando Miller.

The Canaries scored four more runs in the second as they sent eight men to the plate. With two on and nobody out Tim Marks singled home a run. Coughlan followed with an RBI single and two batters later Miller singled home a pair.

The play of the game came in the bottom of the second inning. The Saints loaded the bases with nobody out and Kevin Sullivan hit a laser destined for left-center, but Miller, at short, made a leaping grab and doubled up Fernando Valenzuela Jr. at third.

With the Saints trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the seventh Demetrius Heath led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by thirdbaseman Matt Imwalle. Adam Bourassa walked and Derrick White tattooed a three-run shot, three quarters of the way up the scoreboard, his second homer of the season to make it 9-4. The Saints would tack on one more run in the inning, but would draw no closer.

The Explorers defeated the Fort Worth Cats 4-3 in 10 innings dropping the Saints lead in the division to two with eight games to play. The same two teams meet Friday night at Midway Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints will send their newest acquisition RHP Dustin Bolton (2-8, 4.48 with St. Joe) against Canaries LHP Ryan Ford (5-5, 3.96). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network and heard on KBGY 107.5 FM. It is German Night presented by Hiway Federal Credit Union.
