Altoona Curve News Release

In a roster move announced Wednesday, Altoona Curve left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm has been placed on the Disabled List with a strained left groin muscle, retroactive to May 3rd. The 22-year old left-hander, who was the Pirates' first round selection (8th overall) in the 2003 draft out of Mississippi State, left his start on Monday against Reading after just one inning of work. He will definitely miss his next scheduled start on Saturday afternoon at Trenton and will be replaced in the rotation by right-hander Hansel Izquierdo.

Meanwhile, joining the Curve's active roster on Wednesday is left-handed starter Tom Gorzelanny. The 22-year old, who followed Maholm as the Pirates' 2nd round selection in 2003, will make his season debut as a starter Wednesday night against the Reading Phillies at Blair County Ballpark. Gorzelanny missed the first month of the season with soreness in his left (throwing) elbow. The Orland Park, IL native actually made his Double-A debut for the Curve during the 2004 Eastern League playoffs, going 1-1 and allowing just one ER in 9.0 innings of work over two relief appearances. Gorzelanny was rated by Baseball America as the Pirates' #5 prospect entering the 2005 season.

The Curve and Reading Phillies will play the third game of their four-game series Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark. Gorzelanny will be matched up against Reading right-hander Chris Rojas in the 6:35 PM contest.
