Third baseman Rob Cosby delivered a one-out single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats went on to score a 3-1 win Wednesday afternoon in Norwich.
First baseman Vito Chiaravalloti added an RBI sacrifice fly in the ninth inning off reliever Brian Burres (0-1) as the Fisher Cats won for the second straight game.
In the ninth, second baseman Carlo Cota (2-for-3, RBI) led off with a single. Designated hitter Kevin Barker followed with a base hit to left. Right fielder Maikel Jova bunted the runners to second and third. Norwich (11-15) intentionally walked catcher Erik Kratz to load the bases just before the Cosby and Chiaravalloti RBI's.
New Hampshire (13-12) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Left fielder Ron Acuna reached on an infield single, stole second and went to third when the catcher's throw on the steal attempt went into centerfield. He scored on Cota's fly to center.
Norwich tied the game at 1-1 in the last of the third inning on a solo homer by shortstop Tim Hutting off starter Ismael Ramirez. Ramirez, who came off the disabled list to start the game, allowed 2 hits in five innings of work, walking one and striking out three.
Ryan Houston (1-1) struck out four in three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Closer Lee Gronkiewicz worked the ninth and picked up his sixth save for the Fisher Cats.
The four-game series concludes Thursday night in Norwich with Josh Banks (4-0) on the mound for the Fisher Cats and James Garcia (2-3) scheduled for the Navigators.
New Hampshire will return home on Friday night to start a three-game series with New Britain (Minnesota AA). Game time is 6:35pm and tickets are available through the team website at www.nhfishercats.com.
