Magic Win Second Straight over Drive

GRAND RAPIDS - The Lakeland Magic (4-6) defeated the Grand Rapids Drive (5-5) for the second time in two consecutive meetings Friday night with a 119-95 win on the road. The Magic and Drive played twice in Grand Rapids over the course of three days, and the Magic came away victorious both times.

Unlike Wednesday's game, Lakeland came flying out of the gates, pushing their lead to 20 points by the end of the first quarter and holding the Drive to just 14 in the first quarter while shooting 5-of-9 from three-point range. They managed to outscore the Drive in the second and third quarters as well. The Drive did not make a significant run until the fourth quarter when the outcome was no longer in question.

Lakeland played nine players, and all scored at least six points with six players reaching double figures and four players scoring at least 17 points. Amile Jefferson and Troy Caupain split the scoring lead with 20 points each, combining for 15 rebounds as well. Antonio Campbell was also extremely effective in 24 minutes off the bench for the Magic, scoring 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting with seven rebounds and a team-high six assists. BJ Johnson also chipped in 17 points.

For the Drive, Pistons assignee Luke Kennard was the offensive standout in his second career game for Grand Rapids, scoring 27 points with five rebounds and five assists and hitting 5-of-8 three-pointers in just 24 minutes. Zach Lofton also played well offensively with 24 points.

Keenan Evans was the only other Drive player in double figures with 13 points.

The Magic's offensive efficiency made it hard for the Drive to stay in the game, as the visitors hit 56 percent of their field goals and nearly 50 percent of their three-point attempts. This led the Drive to pull down only 30 rebounds, a season low. Lakeland's ball movement was also excellent all night, as they recorded 27 assists as a team with six players registering at least three helpers.

Lakeland pushed their lead to 36 points midway through the third quarter. The Drive began the fourth quarter very well with a 25-7 run to open it, but they had fallen too far behind in the earlier parts of the game.

Having now won three of four, the Magic will look to keep it going against the Long Island Nets on the road Sunday. The Drive are now done with their six-game homestand and will play Raptors 905 next, also on the road Sunday.
