Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., - Marty Magers picked up his first home victory in Bakersfield, stopping 50 shots en route to the Condors' 4-1 win over the Phoenix Roadrunners in front of 6,536 fans at the Rabobank Arena.
Bakersfield struck quickly on the power play when Mike Hofstrand set up at the top of the left wing circle and collected a pass from Kevin Truelson. Hofstrand touched it once before turning and firing a slapshot past the right side of Phoenix netminder Ryan Cyr. Scott Balan assisted as the Condors took a 1-0 lead just 1:21 into the game.
Following three consecutive Phoenix wrist shot that missed the posts on either side of Condors goaltender Marty Magers, Steve Howard came back and set up behind the Roadrunners cage. Howard flicked a pass to Kevin St. Jacques at the top corner of the crease. St. Jacques one-timed a chip shot over the left shoulder of Cyr to give the Condors a 2- 0 lead with 2:09 remaining in the second period.
Early in the third, Joel Irving worked the puck to the far post and tapped a shot on Cyr. The rebound careened to Dave Bonk outside the crease, and Bonk flicked a wrister under the back crossbar. Balan picked up his second assist of the night as Bakersfield made it 3-0 just 1:22 into the third period.
Phoenix crashed the net midway through the third period after Mike Ouellet battled to bring the puck toward Magers. After chances by Ouellet and Shawn Snider, Taylor Christie lifted the dish over the outstretched Magers, cutting Bakersfield's lead to 3- 1.
Cyr was pulled for the extra skater with under two minutes remaining, and Kevin Kotyluk took advantage and scored with 53 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Marty Magers earned the win with 51 saves on 52 Phoenix shots. Ryan Cyr was credited with the loss despite making 22 stops on 25 shots faced.
Other notes: With his goal, Kevin St. Jacques moves to within eight points of career point 1,000. Scott Balan has recorded six assists in his last three games.
For the record: The Condors picked up their third win in a row and improved to 32-23-5 for 69 points. Bakersfield trails Long Beach by six points for 2nd place in the Pacific Division following the Ice Dogs' 4-3 overtime loss to the Fresno Falcons.
Bakersfield hosts the Stockton Thunder on Monday, March 20th for the Help for the Homeless Canned Food Drive sponsored by KERN 1410 AM. Fans can receive terrace admission for $1 by bringing two non-perishable food items for donation to various Bakersfield charities.
