EDINBURG, Texas - Bunyu Maeda hit a solo home run to cap off the rally to defeat the McAllen Thunder in walk-off fashion by a score of 5-4 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Roadrunners got on the board in the first inning when Augustin Septimo reached on a fielder's choice and was moved over by a Fernando de los Santos single over to second.
Carlton Salters belted a two run double to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Roadrunners. Salters would score in the inning courtesy of Chris Christopolous single to make it 3-0 game.
McAllen would respond with three runs in the second and third innings to tie the game until the seventh inning.
The Thunder (6-7) seventh inning started with a Cody Bishop double and would score on an error that made it a 4-3 game.
Edinburg (5-8) was down 4-3 heading into eighth inning when Austin Fraker led off with a single to start the rally. After a sacrifice bunt moved Fraker to second, and Septimo had an RBI single to tie the game at four.
Maeda needed only one pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game, as the Roadrunners would be victorious.
Trent Evins (1-1) took the loss for the Thunder going eight innings allowing five earned runs giving up nine hits.
Julio Castro (1-0) earned his first win of the season throwing a scoreless frame while striking out a pair of hitters.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will play game two of the four game series at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch set for 7:05 pm.
Saturday's game will be Wendy's family night where a proof of purchase will be good for a Family Ticket and good up to six people
