HARGLINGEN- Albert Carpen collected five hits to raise his batting average to .510 and A.J. Smouse pitched a quality start allowing only two earned runs in seven innings as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings defeated the Alexandria Aces, 11-3.

Carpen, the second leading hitter in all of Division I baseball in 2012 when he hit .426 at Chicago State, used his safeties to score two runs and drove in another to aid the WhiteWings' cause.

Smouse (2-0), meanwhile, retired 11 straight Aces hitters from the first to the fifth inning as the WhiteWings' scored 11 runs off starter Clay Vanderlaan (0-2) and reliever Aryo Fleming.

"We got off to a poor start," said Aces manager Von Hayes. "We weren't throwing enough strikes."

Hayes felt poor pitch selection was a major culprit of the Aces (6-7) worst loss of the season.

"In the beginning of the game we had a 1-0 lead," Hayes said. The Aces had gone ahead when Derrick Pyles drove in his league leading 13th run on an infield single. "The leadoff hitter [Carpen] got on, and then we had a 3-2 count on the second hitter [Thomas Shull].

"He was thrown a slider and walked him. It was poor pitch selection."

Aaron Gates had three hits and drove in four runs, including a bases loaded double off Lou Madrid that plated the WhiteWings (7-6) final three runs.

Catcher Johnny Bowden also had three hits and scored three runs and also drove in his first run of the year with a single off Fleming during Rio Grande Valley's 3-run third inning.

Smouse, meanwhile, allowed only two earned runs and five hits in a seven inning stint.

Eddie Murray had two hits for the Aces and scored the game's first run while driving in Alexandria's final tally.

The Aces play at Rio Grande Valley tomorrow in the second game of the four game set. Jon Jones (2-0) pitches for Alexandria against Bill O'Neil (2-0).
