San Angelo Colts News Release
Fort Worth, Texas --- The Fort Worth Cats scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, pummeling the Colts, 17-7, Thursday night at LaGrave Field.
In addition to scoring four first inning runs, the Cats had five runs apiece in the third and fifth innings. Catcher Shelby Ford propelled the offense, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored. His biggest hit was a three-run double in the fifth.
Right fielder Chris Ellison also had a strong showing at the plate. Ellison went 3-for-6 three RBIs.
The Colts were led offensively by right fielder Mike Mobbs. He went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs. It was his second homer of the year. Mobbs was also a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
At the start of the eighth inning, the field lights shut off, causing a brief delay. After the lights came back on, the umpiring crew opted to call the game and avoid risking another power outage.
Cats' starter Aaron Wilkerson (1-0) earned the win, allowing four runs on five hits in four innings of work. Although he did not pitch five innings, Wilkerson got the victory when the game shortened. Cats' reliever and former Colt Stephen Nikonchik earned a three-inning save, his first of the year.
Colts' starter Alex Bates (1-1) suffered his first professional loss. He gave up nine runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
The win improves the Cats to 9-4, while the loss drops the Colts to 6-7. San Angelo has now lost four games in a row. This series continues with game two Friday night at LaGrave Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and the game can be heard live beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1260 KKSA.
The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 14th season. For more information or to purchase season tickets, contact the Colts' front office at 94-COLTS.
