Maciocia named a finalist for CFL Coach of the Year honours

(Edmonton) Danny Maciocia, head coach of the defending Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos has been named one of three finalists for the CFL Coach of the Year Award. In his first season as head coach, the 38 year old Maciocia helped guide Edmonton to an 11 - 7 regular season record, playoff wins over Calgary and BC and a thrilling victory over Montreal in the 2005 Grey Cup.

Maciocia says "I'm honoured by the nomination and it's a real privilege to be in the company of both Tom Higgins and Mike Clemons".

Maciocia is also the head coach of Team Canada which is defending it's title at the NFL Global Junior Championships this week in Detroit. The CFL Coach of the Year Award will be presented February 23 in Toronto.

7-2 record at home, tied with BC for best home record.

Posted the best average time of possession, controlling the ball for more than half the game (32:22).

Defence was tops in 14 categories, including; Fewest first downs allowed (328) - Fewest yards allowed (5,527) - Most sacks (47), tied with CGY.

Maciocia is the Eskimos' 17th head coach since 1949 and the first Canadian born head coach since Annis Stukus (1949-'51).

First Quebec-born head coach to win Grey Cup.

Edmonton slotback Jason Tucker (CFL All-Star) led the League in receiving yards with 1,411 (15.9 avg.).

Edmonton QB Ricky Ray broke the record for most completions in a season (479).

Sixth rookie head coach since 1950 to win Grey Cup [Frank Clair (1950), Clem Crowe (1951), Frank Ivy (1954), Ralph Sazio (1953), Sam Etcheverry (1970), Adam Rita (1991)].

The last rookie head coach to win the Grey Cup was awarded the Annis Stukus Award (Adam Rita, Toronto Argonauts, 1991).

The last rookie head coach to win Coach of the Year was Greg Marshall (Hamilton, 2004).
