PEARL, Mis. - The Biscuits (2-1) fell behind early and never recovered, losing their first game of 2022, 8-2, to the Mississippi Braves (1-2) in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Trustmark Park.
Jared Shuster (1-0) started for the M-Braves and the lefty worked a one-two-three top of the first, ringing up Austin Shenton for his first strikeout of the afternoon.
Ian Seymour (0-1) made his Double-A debut on the other side for the Biscuits and the southpaw retired the first two batters he faced on groundouts to second before walking Jesse Franklin V and serving up a single to Hendrik Clementina. Seymour then got Drew Lugbauer to fly out to center to complete a scoreless first inning.
Shuster struck out Jordan Qsar and Hill Alexander-both swinging-in another one-two-three second inning. The M-Braves would crack Seymour in the second inning thanks to a two-run single up the middle off the bat of Michael Harris II to make it 2-0 Mississippi.
Grant Witherspoon responded with a solo home run to left on the first pitch of the third inning to make it a 2-1 ballgame. But Mississippi would respond with a four-spot thanks to RBI-singles from Lugbauer, C.J. Alexander, Trey Harris, and Harris II, to make it 6-1.
Nathan Witt made his season debut for the Biscuits and struck out one in a scoreless fifth. Trevor Brigden came on for Witt and worked a scoreless sixth, striking out a pair, and then a one-two-three seventh, picking up another strikeout. Shenton cracked his first home run of the season to right to make it 6-2 in the eighth, extending his RBI-streak to three games.
The M-Braves would add two more runs off Evan Reifert in the bottom of the eighth thanks to another RBI-single by Lugbauer and a wild pitch to increase the lead to six. Johan Lopez recorded his first Double-A hit-a hustle double to center field-before Jake Higginbotham got Greg Jones to ground out to end the game.
The Biscuits will be off Monday, but will return to Riverwalk Stadium for the first time since 2021 with a six-game series against the Tennessee Smokies on Opening Night with a MAX Fireworks Show on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:35 PM when Michael Mercado takes on Javier Assad.
The rest of the series will include Military Wednesday presented by WOW! on Wednesday, April 13; Biscuits-Themed Hat Shirt Giveaway & Thirsty Thursday on Thursday, April 14; Ladies Night on Friday, April 15; The Nine Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, April 16; and Easter Egg Hunt with Bark in the Park on Sunday, April 17.
