M-Braves Top Biscuits, 4-1

PEARL, Mis. - The Biscuits (56-52) recorded their first RBI-base hit since Thursday night, but ultimately came up short in a 4-1 series opening loss to the Mississippi Braves (62-40) on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park. The Biscuits are now in third place in the Double-A South with 11 games to play in the regular season.

Hayden Deal started on the mound for the M-Braves, and the lefty allowed a single to Xavier Edwards in the top of the first, but retired everyone else and picked up a strikeout. Adrian De Horta (2-4) started on the other side for the Biscuits, and the right-hander issued a lead-off walk, but retired the final three batters of the inning, striking out the final two, leaving Justin Dean stranded on third.

Deal worked a one-two-three top of the second, notching another strikeout. De Horta did the same in the bottom of the second, picking up two more punch-outs to run his total to four. Deal hit Jim Haley, who was picked off and caught stealing to end a scoreless top of the third.

The M-Braves would strike first with a two-run home run to right off the bat of Greyson Jenista to put Mississippi ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Luke Waddell followed up the round-tripper with an RBI-single later in the inning, the second baseman's first Double-A RBI.

Deal allowed another single to Edwards in the top of the fourth, but retired the rest and racked up his fourth strikeout. Indigo Diaz (2-0) took over for Deal and worked a scoreless fifth after Jordan Brink came on for De Horta and worked a scoreless bottom of the fourth and fifth.

Cristofer Ogando worked a scoreless sixth, and then Chris Gau allowed a solo home run to Hendrik Clementina in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-0 Mississippi. Haley hit a solo home run to left in the eighth inning off Corbin Clouse to end a Biscuits' RBI-base hitless streak of 36.2 innings and pulled one back for the Biscuits at 4-1. However, Brooks Wilson closed things out in the ninth to lock up the win for Mississippi.

The Biscuits will try to rebound when Easton McGee (5-1) goes up against Jared Shuster (0-0) on Wednesday at 6:35 PM CT.

The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for their final six-game series of the 2021 regular season against the Birmingham Barons starting on a Golden Biscuits Tuesday, on September 14 at 6:35 PM CT.
