
M-Braves Take Series Opener, Defeat Blue Wahoos

PEARL, MS -- Jason Hursh and Jorge Reyes combined to limit the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to just three hits en route to a 6-2 victory Saturday evening at Trustmark Park. The series continues Sunday at 5:00 PM.
Hursh (9-6) started and worked six frames for the M-Braves (19-17, 58-47). He held the Blue Wahoos to one earned run on two hits and two walks while fanning four. Reyes (S, 1) worked the final three frames to pick up his first save. He gave up one earned run on one hit.
Mississippi scored six runs on nine hits. Pensacola (14-22, 45-61) plated two runs on three hits. Jose Peraza led the Braves offensively with a three-hit night at the plate. He scored three runs and drove in one. Rich Poythress added two hits as well.
The M-Braves jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Jose Peraza singled, Kyle Kubitza walked and Rich Poythress singled to load the bases with one out. David Rohm grounded out to short, scoring Peraza from third. Daniel Castro then delivered a RBI-single to deep short.
Devin Lohman walked and Ben Lively singled to start the Blue Wahoos' third. Yorman Rodriguez then drew a walk to load the bases before a wild pitch allowed Lohman to score, cutting the M-Braves lead to 2-1.
The M-Braves made it a 3-1 game in the fifth. Peraza doubled and came in to score when Mycal Jones reached on an error by the third baseman.
Kyle Waldrop blasted a solo homer to right in the seventh, cutting the Braves lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gustavo Nunez singled and took second on an errant throw by the pitcher. Kyle Wren reached on another error by the pitcher to put runners at the corners with no outs. Nunez then came in to score on a wild pitch, extending the Braves lead to 4-2. Peraza delivered a RBI-single to left and then stole second base and took third on a sacrifice bunt. Kubitza's single to center drove home Peraza, making it a 6-2 game.
Ben Lively (0-5) tossed six innings, giving up three runs and two earned runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out five batters and took the loss.
In game two of this five-game series, M-Braves right-hander J.R. Graham (1-5, 5.61) takes the hill against Blue Wahoos righty Daniel Corcino (9-8, 4.33). First pitch is slated for 5:00 PM. Gates open at 4:00 PM.
