Smokies Overtake Barons with Extra-Inning Win

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons dropped their series opener to the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 7-4 in front of a sellout crowd at Regions Field.

Top Cubs prospect Addison Russell broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run against starter Scott Snodgress in the fourth inning.

The Barons recorded just two hits through the first five innings of the game but erupted for three runs on three hits against Smokies starter Matt Loosen in the sixth. Jared Mitchell scored the first run on a base hit by Rangel Ravel, tying the game at 1-1. After a single by Josh Richmond, Christian Marrero put theBarons ahead 3-1 with a double into the right field corner knocking Lossen from the game.

Scott Snodgress allowed just two hits through the first six innings but a double by Stephen Bruno and a two-run home run by Taylor Davis in the seventh tied the game at 3-3.

Mitchellhelped the Barons reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the inning, plating Jeremy Farrell from third after he led off the inning with a ground rule double.

Russell continued his torrid hitting with an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning scoring Jae-Hoon Ha from first base against reliever Brandon Hardin.

The game remained tied into extra innings where David put the Smokies ahead forgood with a bases-clearing double against Nick McCully (4-9, 5.96) in the tenth inning.

With the loss, the Barons fell to 18-17 in the second half and 47-58 on the year, falling a half game behind the Smokies in the North Division standings. The Barons will turn to rebound tomorrow afternoon as RHP Mike Recchia (5-2, 2.69) takes the hill against RHP Corey Black (5-6, 3.02). First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM CDT.
