Mississippi Braves News Release
Huntsville, AL - The Mississippi Braves tied two team records on Friday night in Huntsville en route to a 13-2 series-opening pounding of the Huntsville Stars at Joe Davis Stadium.
In the win, Tommy La Stella extended his hit streak to 20 games, tying the Braves record set by Carl Loadenthal in 2007. Jaime Pedroza drove in six runs, tying Jarrod Saltalamacchia's record set in 2006.
La Stella wasted no time extending his streak, pummeling a pitch over the right field wall for his second home run of the season. And that was just the match that lit the fuse.
Mississippi (21-18; 59-50) racked up ten runs over the first five innings, plowing through Huntsville starting pitcher Drew Gagnon, who made it just three innings in the loss.
In the second inning, Christian Marrero clubbed a two-run home run to make it 3-0. It was his seventh home run of the season and his second in four games.
The biggest offensive inning came in the third, when Jaime Pedroza hit a two-run single, and Dan Brewer followed suit with a two-run double to put the game in blowout territory. After the Braves' third, Mississippi led 7-0.
The Braves tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a Robby Hefflinger sacrifice fly and a Pedroza single. Another run came across in the fifth on a Mycal Jones single, extending his hit streak to 12 games.
All the while, Aaron Northcraft held the Stars (17-23; 46-62) at bay. He allowed just a run and four hits over five innings en route to his sixth win. After Northcraft, Tom Keeling, Andrew Russell and James Hoyt combined to stifle the bats over the final four frames to close it out.
The Stars scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rightfielder Rene Tosoni hit an RBI single to plate Chadwin Stang to pull to 7-1. Their only other run came on a Jason Rogers sixth inning home run, his league leading 19th.
In the seventh inning, Pedroza came to the plate with the bags full, smacking a pitch down the right field line for a bases clearing double. That gave him six RBI on the day, tying the team record.
The Braves have now won 8 of 11 and look to continue their momentum on Saturday night in game two of the five game series in Huntsville, with first pitch slated for 6:43 PM CT. Mississippi will send right-hander Gus Schlosser (6-3, 2.35) against righty Andy Moye (5-11, 4.25) for the Stars. Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM with the "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
