KODAK, Tenn. - The Chicago Cubs have named Tennessee Smokies pitcher Matt Loosen as the organization's minor league pitcher of month for July. This is the first organizational award for Loosen and third for a member of the Smokies pitching staff this season.

Loosen, 24, combined to go 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA (4 ER/37.1 IP) in six starts during the month between Tennessee and the High-A Daytona Cubs. The right-hander spent most of the month with the D-Cubs, before being called up to Tennessee on July 27. On July 8 at Dunedin, Loosen tossed a nine-inning no-hitter, walking two and striking out nine, which also led to Florida State League Pitcher of the Week honors.

Loosen holds a 1-2 record with a 6.92 ERA (31 ER/40.1 IP) in 10 appearances (eight starts) with the Smokies during the 2013 campaign. Overall, he is 6-4 with a 4.01 ERA (42 ER/94.1 IP) with 91 strikeouts, while limiting opposing batters to a .216 batting average (75-for-347). Since being drafted in 2010, Loosen is 23-18 with a 3.90 ERA (143/330 IP) and two complete game shutouts.

The Mineola, N.Y. native was drafted by the Cubs in the 23rd round of the 2010 draft out of Jacksonville University.
