Barons Fall in Series Opener to Pensacola

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons surrendered a season-high 16 runs Friday in a 16-8 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in front of 7,339 fans at Regions Field.

The Barons would take an early 1-0 lead over the Wahoos in the second inning on a solo home run by Dan Black, his 13th homer of the season.

The Wahoos would respond an inning later with five runs against starter Scott Carroll, getting two on a base hit by Yorman Rodriguez and three more on a home run by Donald Lutz.

Cody Puckett, facing his former team for the first time this season, hit the Barons' second solo home run of the night in third to make it a 5-2 ballgame.

The Barons would storm back to take a 7-5 lead with five runs in the fourth. The inning started with the Barons' third solo home run of the game, a shot to center field by Brandon Jacobs to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Later in the inning, Keenyn Walker would draw a bases-loaded walk, chasing Pensacola starter Jon Moscot from the ballgame. His replacement, Chris Manno, would allow an RBI base hit to Dan Wager to tie the game at 5-5. The Barons would take a 7-5 lead on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Saladino and an RBI hit by Dan Black.

Pensacola would storm back to take a 9-7 lead with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Mike Costanzo would double in two in the fifth to tie the game at 7-7. Devin Lohman would follow an inning later with a two-run single to give the Wahoos the lead.

Pensacola would put the game out of reach with six more runs in the seventh on a two-run triple by Travis Mattair and a double by former Barons Brandon Short and a two-run home run by Lohman to take a 15-8 lead. With the loss, the Barons fell to 67-44 and 23-18 in the second half while Pensacola improved to 45-64 and 20-20 in the second half.

The Barons will look to rebound tomorrow night as RHP Stephen McCray (9-7, 3.49) takes the hill against RHP Daniel Renken (5-7, 3.37). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
