Mississippi Braves News Release

Chattanooga, TN - The Mississippi Braves scored early, but the Chattanooga Lookouts scored often as they downed the M-Braves 13-8 on Thursday night at AT&T Field.

Mississippi (32-28) plated five runs in the first four innings to support starter Aaron Northcraft. But the Lookouts (29-31) plated six runs, including a four-run fifth, to end Northcraft's night after just 4 1/3 innings.

From that four-run fifth, the Lookouts never looked back, scoring 10 runs over the next four innings to build up a 13-5 lead. The Braves battled in the ninth, scoring three times with two outs, but the rally fell short.

Mississippi led off the night with three straight singles by Phil Gosselin, Tommy La Stella and Jose Martinez. All three came into score thanks to a wild pitch, a ground out, and a throwing error respectively.

In the bottom of the first, the Lookouts bounced right back scoring twice off Northcraft on an RBI triple for centerfielder Joc Pederson, then an RBI double by third baseman Sean Burroughs. After an eventful first inning, it was 3-2 Braves.

But not for long. Catcher Jan Vazquez led off the second inning with a solo home run to tie the game 3-3, his second home run of the season.

The Braves regained the lead in the fourth, scoring two runs on Chattanooga starter Ross Stripling. After Jaime Pedroza led off the inning with a single, Mycal Jones drove him in with a double. Aaron Northcraft reached on a fielder's choice and new shortstop Luis Nunez hit an RBI single to make it 5-3 Braves.

Then came the torrent of Lookouts runs. Chattanooga scored four in the fifth, three earned, then two more unearned in the seventh to make it 9-5. Even so, the game didn't seem out of reach until the eighth, when Chattanooga delivered a pair of home runs to grow the lead.

Brian Cavazos-Galvez led off the eighth with a solo home run off reliever Tom Keeling. Sean Burroughs then walked before Keeling got the next two outs. Vazquez singled to put two on, and Ozzie Martinez hit a pinch-hit three -run home run, his first of the year to make it 13-5.

Aaron Northcraft (2-4) suffered the loss, going 4 1/3 and allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits. Steve Smith (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Chattanooga, going three innings of shutout baseball. Stripling went four in the start for the Lookouts, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits.

Because the Jacksonville Suns and Mobile BayBears were cancelled on Thursday afternoon, the Braves maintain their lead in the Southern League South first half race, but it's now down to just a 1/2 game with 10 games remaining.

With the loss, the Braves dropped the series in Chattanooga after winning the first two of the five game set. Mississippi has now lost five consecutive series.

The Braves will open a series on Friday night with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM CT, with Cody Martin (2-3, 3.02) toeing the rubber against Blue Wahoos right-hander Shaun Ellis (1-1, 3.50). Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM with the "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
