Mississippi Braves News Release
Chattanooga, TN - Through ten innings, the Mississippi Braves and Chattanooga Lookouts were locked in a rare extra-inning scoreless tie. Bobby Coyle made sure the game didn't last past the 11th.
With two men on and two out, the Lookouts leftfielder dropped a line-drive single to center, scoring Sean Burroughs from second for a 1-0 win over the Mississippi Braves. It was the second consecutive walk-off win for Chattanooga (28-31).
The knock came after an hour and 23 minutes of rain delay and 10 1/2 innings of scoreless baseball. Each team had their threats through the first nine but fell short.
Gus Schlosser pitched five innings for the Braves (32-27) in the no-decision, allowing four early hits but striking out five and working out of a few early jams.
In each of the first two innings, the Lookouts put men at second and third with two outs but couldn't push across a run. Schlosser got shortstop Ozzie Martinez to ground out to short to end the first and struck out second baseman Rafael Ynoa to get out of the second inning.
The Lookouts also got a leadoff double in the third from centerfielder Joc Pederson, but he moved no further as Schlosser set the Lookouts down 1-2-3.
And that double was the last hit Chattanooga got until the ninth inning when first baseman Angelo Songco led off the frame with a single.
The Braves had threats of their own, most notably in the sixth when Christian Bethancourt and Jose Martinez stood at second and third with one out. Christian Marrero popped one high to shallow center, caught by Pederson and Bethancourt was thrown out trying to tag and score.
Mississippi got one hit the rest of the game, a leadoff single for Edward Salcedo in the sixth. After that, Lookouts pitching retired the final 15 Braves batters.
Lookouts starter Rob Rasmussen pitched six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Reliever Yimi Garcia (2-3) got the win, pitching the final three innings scoreless. Mark Lamm (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Leading into Thursday night's finale, the Braves haven't scored an earned run in 23 2/3 innings. Just one unearned run has been pushed across, coming in the seventh inning on Tuesday night, a 2-1 loss.
With the Braves loss, the Jacksonville Suns and Mobile BayBears pull to a game deficit in second place in the South division with 11 games remaining in the first half. The Montgomery Biscuits aren't far behind in fourth, just two games back.
The Braves will try to wake up the bats and win the series in Chattanooga in the Thursday night finale beginning at 6:15 PM CT. Aaron Northcraft (1-2, 4.43) gets the start for Mississippi against Lookouts right-hander Ross Stripling (1-1, 2.66). Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 5:45 PM with the "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
