M-Braves Drop Series Opener to Biscuits

PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (50-63, 17-28) dropped their series opener, 9-6, to the Montgomery Biscuits (61-54, 25-21) on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Cal Conley went 3-for-4 and finished a homer shy of the cycle, and Cade Bunnell hit his 14th home run of the season. Starter Justus Sheffield was tossed after one inning. The M-Braves were forced to use four relief pitchers.

After Montgomery took a 1-0 lead, the M-Braves put up four runs in the fourth inning. Jesse Franklin V led off with a ground-rule double that landed just under the home-run line in left-center field. The next pitch, Bunnell smacked a two-run homer to right field. Landon Stephens scored a run on a sacrifice fly, and Drew Campbell scored on a fielding error.

Franklin extended his on-base streak to 30 games, going 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run. Campbell extended his on-base streak to 13 games and has 15 hits in 12 games in August. Bunnell went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

Montgomery responded with eight unanswered runs, putting up three homers in the next three innings. The Biscuits took a 9-4 lead into the seventh.

Luke Waddell scored Cody Milligan on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 9-5 and scored another run on a groundout in the ninth to make it 9-6. Conley tripled in the ninth inning on a ball he roped into the right-field gap.

Milligan went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in the leadoff spot.

The second game of the series is on Wednesday night at Trustmark Park. RHP Nolan Kingham (2-1, 3.86) will make the start Mississippi while RHP Cole Wilcox (2-8, 5.57) will start for Montgomery.
