July 22, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Montgomery Biscuits (16-14, 53-47) scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and won Sunday's series finale 5-1 over the Mississippi Braves (15-14, 44-55), stopping a three-game winning streak. The M-Braves won the series, 3-2, and come home with the second-best record in the league in July at 12-8.
Making his fifth Double-A start, M-Braves starter Bruce Zimmermann (L, 2-1) ran into trouble immediately. Biscuits' leadoff hitter Michael Russell started the frame with a double off the top of the left field wall. Zimmermann would walk the next three batters with the first run scoring on a wild pitch. Dalton Kelly reached on a fielding error allowing Nick Solak to score and the Biscuits led 2-0. Brett Sullivan pushed their lead to 4-0 with a two-run single. Zimmermann got the first out on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Croneneworth to make it 5-0. Zimmermann walked the next hitter and exited after 1/3 of an inning and four runs on just two hits with four walks. Elian Leyva took over out of the bullpen and recorded the final two outs.
The M-Braves bullpen held Montgomery's offense in check for the remainder of the game. Leyva tossed 3.2 scoreless innings on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Adam McCreery added 1.2 scoreless behind Leyva.
The Braves didn't score against Montgomery starter Brock Burke (W, 1-0), making his Riverwalk Stadium debut. The Tampa Bay Rays prospect struck out nine and walked three over 5.0 shutout innings.
Tyler Neslony led off the sixth inning with a single against Biscuits reliever Travis Ott and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Travis Demeritte followed with a single to place runners at the corners. Carlos Martinez lifted a fly ball deep enough to right field, enabling Neslony to score and get Mississippi on the board at 5-1.
Tyler Pike relieved McCreery in the sixth inning and pitched 1.1 scoreless. Thomas Burrows made his M-Braves and Double-A debut and gave up two hits, but struck out the side.
Alejandro Salazar was 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to six games.
The M-Braves head home to begin a ten-game homestand against Mobile and Birmingham at Trustmark Park. The first game of the series against Mobile is on Monday night at 7:00 pm. It's another SportClips Military Monday. Members of the military may purchase a $7 ticket in all seating areas, excluding Suite Level, when presenting a valid ID.
