BayBears Can't Keep up with Lookouts After Leading Early
July 22, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, got on the board first but dropped the series finale to the Chattanooga Lookouts 9-4 Sunday evening at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The BayBears (48-49 overall, 11-18 second half) plated the first run of the game on a Riley Unroe single off Lewis Thorpe (5-4) in the second. However, Chattanooga (48-51, 12-18) responded with five runs off Joe Gatto (3-4) in the top of the third.
Zander Wiel hit a three-run homer to put the Lookouts ahead for good. It was his third long ball of the series and extended his on-base streak to 20 games.
Jose Rojas' on-base streak also stayed alive, courtesy of a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. Rojas has reached safely in 19 straight games, the second-longest active streak in the Southern League behind Wiel's.
Thorpe recorded a quality start, giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings pitched. His other run allowed came on a Brendon Sanger homer in the fifth.
With Sunday's loss, the BayBears have now been swept in back-to-back series. The 10-game losing streak is the third in team history and first since 2009.
The BayBears begin a five-game road series against the Mississippi Braves Monday at 7:00 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Jose Rodriguez (6-7, 5.29 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Enderson Franco (4-7, 3.86 ERA) for the Braves. Live coverage can be seen on MiLB.tv (Mississippi feed, subscription required, promo code: BAYBEARS) and heard on the BayBears Broadcast Network, the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App, with the Countdown to First Pitch starting at 6:45 p.m.
The BayBears return home Saturday and host a total of 70 home dates through Labor Day, September 3. Single-game tickets and ticket packages are currently on sale. Group and hospitality offerings for the 2018 season can be reserved by calling (251) 479-BEAR (2327).
