Mississippi Braves News Release

PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (32-42) devoured the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (29-43) 17-1 on Sunday night at Trustmark Park and also set a new franchise record after scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The previous franchise record for the number of runs scored in an inning was 10.

Mississippi wasted no time as they scored early and often. Travis Demeritte started things off with a sacrifice fly to center field which allowed Daniel Lockhart to score from third base.

In the bottom of the second inning, Lockhart singled on a fly ball to center field allowing Touki Toussaint, who singled earlier in the inning to score from second base.

Jacksonville scored their lone run of the game in the top of the third inning when Peter O'Brien singled on a sharp ground ball to right field, scoring Monte Harrison.

In the bottom of the third inning, the M-Braves capitalized on two wild pitches by Jacksonville starter, Merandy Gonzalez and plated two additional runs, making the score 4-1.

The M-Braves did the majority of their damage in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored 11 runs, setting a new franchise record for the number of runs scored in an inning. 7 of the 11 M-Braves runs in the inning were scored via five doubles from the bats of Alex Jackson, Brandon Downes, Luis Marte, Toussaint, and Demeritte. The five doubles recorded by the M-Braves in the bottom of the fifth inning are also a franchise record for the number of doubles recorded in an inning. Alay Lago added a RBI single and Demeritte scored on a wild pitch from Jacksonville reliever, Miguel Del Pozo. Downes capped off the inning by launching a 449 ft. laser over the right field wall. For Downes, his shot to right field was his first home run as a member of the Atlanta Braves organization.

Entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the M-Braves led 15-1. Demeritte extended the lead 16-1 after drawing a bases-loaded walk, allowing Lockhart to cross the plate.

Mississippi earned their 17th and final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Connor Lien laced a sharp double off of the bottom of the left field wall, plating Downes from third base. For Mississippi, their 17 runs scored in Sunday night's contest is a new season high for the 2018 squad. The previous record for runs scored in a game by the M-Braves in 2018 was 12 which occurred on June 9 in a 12-4 victory against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Trustmark Park.

Toussaint (4-6, 3.19) earned the win for Mississippi after allowing 5 H, R, 0 ER, issuing 2 BB and striking out four in 5.0 IP. After recording four strikeouts in Sunday night's game, Toussaint now leads the Southern League and Double-A baseball with 96 strikeouts on the season. Gonzalez (0-2, 5.40) suffered the loss.

The M-Braves will return to Trustmark Park tomorrow night (Monday, June 25) as they take on the Jumbo Shrimp in game five of the six-game series at Trustmark Park beginning at 7:00 p.m. (CST.) RHP Enderson Franco (2-4, 3.53) is scheduled at the M-Braves Monday night starter. Jacksonville has also elected to start a right-hander as Nick Neidert (6-4, 3.16) will get the start for the Jumbo Shrimp.
