M-Braves Celebrate Championship Friday Night, But Fall to Biscuits, 5-1
April 9, 2022 - Southern League (SL)
Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - On opening day at Trustmark Park, the Mississippi Braves raised the 2021 Double-A South championship banner, and 18 players received championship rings. In the game, the Montgomery Biscuits defeated the Mississippi Braves, 5-1.
Trey Harris and CJ Alexander raised the championship flag in left field in front of a crowd of 3,291 M-Braves fans at Trustmark Park on Opening Night. The front office staff also received Double-A championship rings to commemorate the M-Braves' second championship in club history and first since 2008.
After falling to the Braves 3-2 in the championship series last season, Montgomery (1-0) struck first in the second inning to jump ahead 3-0. Taj Bradley performed well in his first Double-A start for Montgomery. The right-hander, rated the No. 3 Tampa Bay prospect by MLB Pipeline, retired the first eight Mississippi (0-1) batters.
The Braves broke through in the third. Drew Lugbauer smashed a solo home run to the bullpen in right field to cut the lead to 3-1. Lugbauer hit 19 home runs for the M-Braves in 2021.
The M-Braves bullpen provided great relief for starter William Woods in the middle innings. LHP Hayden Deal pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with no hits and four strikeouts. RHP Troy Bacon and LHP Justin Maese combined for another 2.1 scoreless innings to keep the game at 3-1 heading to the ninth.
Mississippi could not get anything going after the fourth inning, putting on only two baserunners after four hits between the third and fourth innings.
Two insurance runs for the Biscuits in the ninth secured the 5-1 win.
Game two of the three-game series is on Saturday night. RHP Darius Vines (NR) will face off against Montgomery RHP Ian Seymour. First pitch is at 6:05 pm with coverage on 103.9 WYAB, MiLB.tv, and the First Pitch App.
