Biloxi Shuckers News Release
PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers (32-57) were held off the board in a 4-0 defeat against the Mississippi Braves (53-36) on Saturday night at Trustmark Park.
Mississippi was able to string together a few base runners to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Trey Harris singled to right with one out and two batters later Shea Langeliers walked, bringing up Wendell Rijo. The third baseman singled up the middle, driving in Harris to put the M-Braves up 1-0.
Biloxi had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the third inning. Luis Castro started the frame with a single and Jesus Lujano doubled down the left-field line to put two men in scoring position. RHP Bryce Elder (W, 7-1) then hit Brent Diaz with a pitch, loading the bases as the lineup turned back over to David Hamilton. Elder responded by striking out Hamilton, Korry Howell and Garrett Mitchell, stranding all three runners to keep Biloxi off the board.
The M-Braves were able to add on another run in the bottom of the fifth. RHP Lucas Erceg (L, 0-5) retired the first batter he faced but departed after issuing a walk to Henrik Clementina. RHP Zack Brown entered for the Shuckers and allowed two singles that scored another run, putting Mississippi ahead 2-0.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Shuckers were able to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Diaz started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a groundout by Hamilton. RHP Troy Bacon (H, 5) struck out Howell but Mitchell walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Alexander Palma came up to bat for the Shuckers but struck out looking to strand both runners.
Mississippi put the game out of reach on a two-runner homer by Rijo in the bottom of the eighth inning, his 13th of the year. RHP Brooks Wilson came on and struck out the side for the M-Braves in the top of the ninth.
Looking to avoid a series sweep, the Shuckers conclude their six-game series against the M-Braves on Sunday afternoon. RHP Jesus Castillo (3-7, 5.52) takes the hill for the Shuckers opposite M-Braves' RHP Freddy Tarnock (2-0, 2.08) for a 2:05 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
