Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PENSACOLA, Flo. - The Biscuits (50-38) scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 7-2 win over Pensacola Blue Wahoos (44-45) on Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Will Stewart (5-6) was on the mound for Pensacola, and after Greg Jones and Jonathan Aranda led off the game with back-to-back singles against the lefty, Ruben Cardenas came to the plate and drilled a three-run home run to left-center field to make it 3-0 Biscuits before an out had been recorded. The Biscuits would score twice more in the inning with RBI-groundouts from Cal Stevenson and Moises Gomez to increase that lead to 5-0.
Easton McGee (4-0) started on the hill for the Biscuits, and the right-hander struck out the side-all swinging-in the bottom of the first. Stewart kept the Biscuits off the board in the top of the second, and McGee did the same to the Wahoos in the bottom of the second.
Stewart then worked a one-two-three third, striking out his third batter. McGee retired three more in a row in the third to remain perfect, ringing up his fourth batter in Santiago Chavez-this one looking. After allowing a double to Seaver Whalen in the fourth, Stewart was removed for Jackson Rose, who walked Aranda but then got Cardenas to pop-out to the shortstop Galli Cribbs Jr. to end the inning.
McGee would allow his first baserunner on a single by Peyton Burdick to begin the bottom of the fourth, but the right-hander still faced the minimum, getting Jerar Encarnacion to ground into the 5-4-3 inning-ending double play. Ford Proctor cracked an RBI-single to right in the fifth to make it a 6-0 game. Griffin Conine hit his minor league-leading 31st home run to right in the bottom of the fifth to pull back a run for Pensacola at 6-1.
Jones teed off for his first Double-A home run in the sixth-a solo shot to right from the left side of the plate-that made it a 7-1 game. The home run was Jones' 14th of the year, after belting 13 at A+ Bowling Green earlier in the season. JJ Bleday's RBI-triple off Ivan Pelaez in the sixth made it a 7-2 contest.
Pelaez ended up going 1.1 scoreless innings, and then Colby White finished the job with two scoreless innings, locking up with victory.
The Biscuits will aim to win the series against the Blue Wahoos in Sunday's finale when Alex Valverde (2-2) takes on Jeff Lindgren (3-8) at 1:00 PM CT.
The second-place Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for a six-game series against the first-place Mississippi Braves starting on a Golden Biscuits Tuesday, on August 17 at 6:35 PM CT.
The rest of the first series will include a Military Wednesday presented by WOW! on Wednesday, August 18; Aviation Night with a T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, August 19; Princess Night - Celebrating Classic Movie Princesses on Friday, August 20; Outdoor Alabama Hunting & Fishing Night presented by Department of Conservation & Natural Resources with MAX Fireworks on Saturday, August 21; and Lil' Crumbs Kids Club presented by Go Fish Alabama & Bark in the Park on Sunday, August 22.
