Omaha Lancers News Release
Ann Arbor, MI - Alex Lyon, celebrating his 19th birthday Friday evening, registered 38 saves as the Omaha Lancers knocked off the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-17 team 6-1 at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. With the win, Omaha improved to 13-8-2 and remains atop the Western Conference with 28 standings points. The victory was Omaha's fourth straight win overall and the team's third straight road victory.
Omaha grabbed the game's opening goal with just under five minutes left in period one when a side angle shot from the left wing by Jonathan Liau slipped through USA goaltender Hunter Miska and rolled over the goal line. The unassisted goal was Liau's sixth of the season and marked the 12th time in 23 games this season that Omaha has landed the game's first marker. The Lancers then doubled the lead just over two minutes later when Greg Gozzo jumped behind the USA defense before sending his eighth goal of the season just inside the left post. Vince Pedrie garnered the only assist on the even strength goal notched 17:35 into the opening period of play.
Omaha extended its lead 3:35 into the second period when a two-on-one between Pedrie and Tanner Lane resulted in Lane's third goal of the season and second as a member of the Lancers.
USA made its first and only dent on the scoresheet just 26 seconds into the third period when Tyler Kelleher pounced on a loose puck in the Omaha goal crease before driving in his fifth goal of the season. Kevin Labanc earned the only assist on the five-on-five goal. The Lancers then put the game away with three goals in a span of just 4:17. First, Jimmy Murray found Matt Gaudreau at the top of the USA goal crease where Gaudreau backhanded in his seventh goal of the season and eighth point in the last four games. Omaha then stretched its lead to 5-1 14:54 into the final period when, while enjoying the team's first power play of the evening, Kenney Morrison launched a one-timer from the left point into the back of the USA cage. Murray and Nolan Zajac assisted on Omaha's 12th man-advantage marker scored this season. The Lancers then received their sixth goal from their sixth different goal scorer 16:08 into the third period when Mark Miller executed a perfect inside-out move before driving in his third goal of the season.
Lyon earned his third straight victory in goal and ninth win this season between the pipes for the Lancers after 38 saves on 39 Team USA shots. With the win, Lyon improved to 9-6-2 on the year. Meanwhile, Miska suffered the setback in goal for USA after just 15 saves on 21 shots.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they head to the L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon for the team's first and only showdown of the 2011-2012 regular season with the Lumberjacks.
