Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Lynx today announced the Tuesday, August 30 game against the Washington Mystics will be HIV/AIDS Awareness Night. Throughout the game the Lynx will educate fans of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS through the use of in-arena PSAs and informational booths from non-profits, health entities and other HIV/AIDS care providers.
The night will be highlighted by a special post-game speech from Lynx guard Candice Wiggins. Wiggins, whose father, Alan Wiggins, passed away due to complications from AIDS just shy of her fourth birthday, will talk about her foundation and address the various ways she is fighting to educate others on the AIDS epidemic.
"Raising awareness and finding a cure for the HIV/AIDS virus is my priority," said Wiggins. "I celebrate the memory of my father and his life fuels my energy and drive. I'm really excited for Tuesday night, and hope everyone will realize how important of an issue HIV/AIDS is today."
In 2008, Wiggins founded the Candice Wiggins Foundation, an organization aimed at reaching out to youth about the AIDS/HIV epidemic. Wiggins also supports other AIDS/HIV awareness organizations, including Until There's A Cure and the Minnesota Aids Project.
"We're very proud to help Candice in her efforts to educate others on HIV/AIDS," said Conrad Smith, Lynx Chief Operating Officer. "This issue not only touches Candice's heart, but also the lives of many of our fans, so it's important to us to help the cause in any way we can."
Participants for the evening include: Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Human Services, Family Tree Clinic, Minnesota AIDS Project, Indigenous Peoples Task Force, Women and Families Network, Open Cities Health Center, Annex Reach Program and Red Ribbon Ride.
