Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx will show off a new look when they take on Lindsay Whalen and the Connecticut Sun Friday night at Target Center. As part of Breast Health Awareness Night, Lynx players will wear commemorative pink jerseys, shorts and shoes Friday night. Select game-worn uniforms will be autographed by the players and auctioned off Saturday, Aug 8 at the "Catwalk for a Cure" fundraiser to be held in the Macy's Rotunda of the Mall of America.
As part of the festivities, the Lynx will honor the Hilstad family of Owatonna, Minn., with a special on-court ceremony during the second quarter of Friday night's game. Lisa Hilstad, a mother of three, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2008, and passed away on April 2, 2009, exactly one month before her home town organized a special half-marathon and 5K walk/run benefit, From the Heart, in her honor. After Hilstad's passing, more than 700 Owatonna residents came to the benefit to support the local hero. Four months after Hilstad's death, the Lynx will pay tribute Friday night to the courage and compassion for others displayed by Hilstad throughout her battle with breast cancer. Owatonna residents are invited to Friday's game to remember and honor their hero, with special ticket discounts given to those in attendance.
"We're proud to support such a powerful platform that touches the lives of so many of our fans," said Conrad Smith, Lynx Chief Operating Officer. "Lisa Hilstad was such a positive role model to the Owatonna community and we're honored to be able to carry on her legacy Friday night at Target Center. We hope this weekend's events will go a long way to finding a cure for breast cancer and we are excited to further our mission of increasing breast cancer funding and awareness in the state of Minnesota."
Friday's Breast Health Awareness Night is part of the WNBA's Breast Health Awareness program. For 12 years, the program has focused on generating awareness and educating women about breast cancer in addition to raising funds for the initiative. The WNBA and its teams have raised more than $2 million to aid in the fight against breast cancer.
