Minnesota Lynx News Release
WHAT: Nearly a month after the May 25th tornado which hit Hugo Minnesota, forty children from Oneka Elementary School will be honored during tonight's Lynx vs. New York game. Oneka Elementary is less than a mile from the neighborhood that was the most severely damaged in last month's storm.
WHERE: Target Center, 600 First Ave. N., Minneapolis
WHEN: TONIGHT - Tuesday, June 24, 7:00 p.m. Tipoff
INFO: Tonight, the Minnesota Lynx will honor forty children from Oneka Elementary School as the honorary group of the game. At the conclusion of the game, the kids will meet and talk with USA Olympian and two-time WNBA All-Star Seimone Augustus. Augustus and the Minnesota Lynx have teamed up with the Twin Cities Red Cross to support community awareness for the local humanitarian organization. In the "Court of Dreams" program, the Lynx have reduced ticket prices for its first 8 games and will donate money from each ticket purchased to the Twin Cities Red Cross. "We've been trying to hold some events with the goal of getting the kids back together. Hugo is a tight neighborhood, but because of the tragic events, everyone is dispersed all over the place in temporary housing. For the kids of the school district and city as a whole, the question was how do we keep these kids together? The Lynx contacted me and told me that Seimone Augustus had a relationship with the Red Cross and would like for our students to come out to a game. She wanted to do something for our community. The thought from the Lynx was if the kids wanted a day away from thinking about their house to enjoy some fun, we could do that for you, which was wonderful," said Teresa Dahlem, Principal of Oneka Elementary School in Hugo, Minn., and a former WNBA referee.
"We had a lot of organizations seek us out as opposed to having to seek out organizations. Most organizations had a lot to do with recovery and support services for the family, but the Lynx were one of the few to come to us and say how can we help the children." Established on July 1, 2006, the American Red Cross Twin Cities Area Chapter is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, providing relief to victims of disasters and helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
