Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The WNBA today named Minnesota Lynx guard Seimone Augustus its Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, August 1 through Sunday, August 7. This is the sixth time in her career that Augustus has earned the weekly honor and second this season. The Lynx have now earned Player of the Week honors four times this season, with Augustus earning the honor for the week of July 18 - 21 and Rebekkah Brunson earning the honor for her play from June 3 - 12 and July 11 - 17. This is just the third time in franchise history the Lynx have had multiple Player of the Weeks in the same season (2 in 2010; 2 in 2009). Augustus was also named Player of the Month for July, the second Lynx Player of the Month this season (Brunson, June).
Augustus led the Lynx to a 3-0 record on the week, including victories over San Antonio and Phoenix, to open up a four-game lead in the Western Conference. Augustus began the week with a 21-point performance against the Phoenix Mercury, including scoring eight points during a pivotal fourth quarter in which the Lynx outscored the Mercury 23-11. Two days later, Augustus added 10 points against San Antonio, including six in the fourth frame, as the Lynx edged the Silver Stars 62-60. In the week's finale, Augustus scored 19 points and grabbed a season-high seven rebounds, including a career-high four offensive boards, as the Lynx snapped a six-game losing streak at Staples Center. The win extended Minnesota's road winning streak to a franchise-best five games and extended Minnesota's overall winning streak to a franchise-best nine games, the longest winning streak in the WNBA this season.
On the season, Augustus ranks eighth in the WNBA with a team-high 16.4 points per game. She also ranks second among guards in field goal percentage (.495) and fourth in rebounding (3.9 rpg). Entering tomorrow night's matchup with the Phoenix Mercury, Augustus is just 21 points shy of reaching the 3,000-point mark for her career. If she reaches the mark tomorrow, she will match Diana Taurasi as the fastest player in league history to reach 3,000 points (151 games).
Connecticut's Tina Charles was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
With last night's victory over the Los Angeles Sparks, the Minnesota Lynx own the best record in the WNBA at 16-4. After quick stops in Phoenix and Chicago, the Lynx return home on Sunday to face the Tulsa Shock. Lower-level single-game tickets for that game and the remaining home schedule can be purchased for as low as $10. Groups of 10 or more can purchase lower-level single-game tickets for as little as $8. Tickets can be purchased by calling 612-673-8400, visiting the Lynx website at www.lynxbasketball.com and stopping by the Target Center Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets.
