INFO: As part of the WNBA's "Go Green" initiative and the Minnesota Lynx Read to Achieve Program, Lynx guard Candice Wiggins will host a "Go Green" Reading Time-Out tomorrow with 50 students from Jefferson Community School in Minneapolis. Wiggins will teach the children the importance of education and staying "green" while reading "The Lorax."
The WNBA will kick of its Green Week next Tuesday, June 1, as the entire WNBA family teams up to generate awareness to protect the environment. Players will wear special oncourt apparel and teams and players participate in hands-on community service projects. The WNBA.com microsite, www.wnba.com/green, will feature everything from greening tips for fans to interviews with WNBA players exploring why environmental awareness is important to them. Special programming for the league's green initiative and awareness efforts will also run on two nationally televised WNBA games June 1 on ESPN2: the Phoenix Mercury vs. the Minnesota Lynx at 7:30 p.m. ET and the Atlanta Dream vs. the Seattle Storm at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The Minnesota Lynx Read to Achieve program is a year-round literacy program to help young people develop a life-long love for reading. Reaching an estimated 50 million children per year, Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. During the season, Lynx players host reading timeouts throughout the Twin Cities area along with monthly book donations.
