MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx and Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) today announced that the team is awarding $3,000 in scholarships to the MCTC "Power of YOU" program. Two of the three students receiving the scholarships will be ceremoniously presented with the awards at center court during Sunday's game (Aug. 6) against the San Antonio Silver Stars. All three of the scholarship recipients graduated last spring from Minneapolis Public Schools and will be starting college at MCTC this fall.
"The Lynx are glad to support such a worthwhile initiative as the "Power of YOU" Program," said Lynx Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer Roger Griffith. "We're happy to help the youth in our community realize their educational goals."
"I want to thank the Minnesota Lynx organization for their generous support of the "Power of YOU"," said Phil Davis, MCTC President. "Thanks to their scholarship donation, three more students will be able to pursue their college goals and dreams."
Last January, Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) announced it was launching Power of YOU. The program, a collaboration among MCTC, Saint Paul College and Metropolitan State University, offered Spring 2006 graduates of a Minneapolis or St. Paul high school who were also residents of either city, a chance to attend MCTC or Saint Paul College this fall, tuition-free. As of July 30, more than 200 students have enrolled for classes at MCTC thanks to the "Power of YOU". Nearly $2 million in private dollars have been raised to help support the program.
Minneapolis Community and Technical College is the most ethnically diverse college in Minnesota. A member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, MCTC offers students a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum and more than 80 career and occupational programs designed to prepare people for good jobs in high-demand professions. Located in downtown Minneapolis, MCTC enrolls more than 11,000 students annually and is an active partner in initiatives designed to strengthen the social, economic and cultural vitality of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
