Houston Comets News Release
HOUSTON - The Houston Comets announced today that the team has signed guard/forward Edwina Brown to an injury exception contract. The signing was made after the recent injuries to both Tamecka Dixon (strained left Achilles) and Tari Phillips (broken right hand), coupled with the existing injuries to Dominque Canty (broken finger, right hand) and Tina Thompson (strained right calf).
This will be Houston's third time (Kayte Christensen and Astou Ndiaye-Diatta) utilizing the injury exception contract this season. With the acquisition of Brown, the Comets will now have nine dressed players for tonight's game at Minnesota (8/4).
Brown (5-9, Texas â00) holds career averages of 5.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 126 games. She was drafted in the first round (#3 overall) of the 2000 WNBA Draft by the Detroit Shock. In three seasons with Detroit, she averaged 5.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 92 games. She was then traded to the Phoenix Mercury along with Lenae Williams in exchange for Petra Ujhelyi and Telisha Quarles, the Mercury's second and third round draft picks in the 2003 WNBA Draft (4/29/03). Brown played the entire 2003 season with the Mercury averaging 3.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 34 games. During the 2004 training camp with Phoenix, Brown tore her Achilles tendon and was out for the entire year. Her most current stint was in this year's New York Liberty training camp, where she played two minutes in one preseason game at Sacramento (5/4) before being waived shortly thereafter.
