LYNX AT FEVER- 7:00 P.M.- CONSECO FIELDHOUSE
Minnesota travels to Indiana tomorrow to take on the Fever at Conseco Fieldhouse. Indiana downed the Lynx twice last season, winning 83-64 back on May 19, 2007 in Indiana and 89-75 ten days later at Target Center. In the teams' first meeting, Tan White's 17 points led five double-figure scorers, and Indiana hit 63 percent in the second half to pull away to an 83-64 victory over the Lynx on May 19 at Conseco Fieldhouse. Tamika Whitmore tallied 16 points and Tamika Catchings netted 12 points and seven rebounds for the Fever. Seimone Augustus' 16 points led Minnesota, while Nicole Ohlde chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds. In the final contest, Indiana received 21 points from Tamika Catchings and used a 12-0 run after half-time to pull away from the Lynx, 89-75, on May 29 at Target Center. Catchings added six rebounds and six assists while Tamika Whitmore tallied 17 points for the Fever. Seimone Augustus topped Minnesota with 23 points, with Lindsey Harding chipping in 17 points and six assists. With the sweep, the Fever increased their lead in the all-time series to 9-5. The home team has won five of the past six meetings between Minnesota and Indiana, with the Lynx' most recent victory a 92-87 decision on June 2, 2006. Minnesota is just 1-6 at Conseco Fieldhouse, winning 70-65 on July 26, 2003. Newcomer Anna DeForge will return to Indiana after signing with the Lynx in the off-season. DeForge spent the past two seasons with the Fever, averaging 8.7 ppg for Indiana in the 2007 season. The Fever come into tomorrow night's game against the Lynx with a 0-1 preseason record after falling to the Chicago Sky, 81-71 Saturday, May 3. In the teams' only other preseason meeting, the Fever bested the Lynx 68-57 back on May 21, 2002 at Target Center. The Lynx open the 2008 regular season schedule May 18 when they play host to the defending WNBA champion Detroit Shock.
LYNX MAKE TRAINING CAMP ROSTER MOVES
The Minnesota Lynx announced on Friday, May 2 that they have claimed point guard Crystal Smith off of waivers from the Houston Comets and re-signed veteran forward Tiffany Stansbury. To make room on the training camp roster, the Lynx also waived center Marita Payne and guards Megan Vogel, Ashley Awkward, and Caroline Williams. Minnesota's roster now stands at 18, with five of those players still out of the country fulfilling their overseas commitments. Smith, a 5-foot-5 point guard, spent the 2007 season with the Comets, appearing in 27 games with 23 starts. She averaged 6.3 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game while averaging 25.3 minutes per game. As a rookie in 2006, she averaged 2.7 points in 22 games with the Phoenix Mercury. Stansbury played in 30 games with the Lynx in 2007 with 14 starts. She averaged 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds. She originally signed with the Lynx on May 25, 2007, after spending the 2006 season with the Los Angeles Sparks. Vogel, a 5-foot-11 graduate of South Dakota State, started all 120 of her team's games over her four-year career and finished second on the school's scoring charts with 1,850 points. Williams, a 2007 graduate of Vanderbilt, finished her collegiate career with the Vanderbilt and Southeastern Conference record for career 3-point shooting percentage, making 46.5 percent of her 512 long-range attempts. Awkward, a 2007 graduate of Ole Miss, closed out her final season ranked second on the team in scoring (12.9), assists (2.7) and steals (1.9). Payne, a 6-5 center and 2006 graduate of Auburn University, averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds and totaled a school-record 377 blocks during four seasons. The Australia native averaged 7.9 points and 6.5 rebounds as a senior. In her junior season (2004-05), Payne led the nation with 141 blocks.
LYNX OPEN UP 10TH ANNIVERSARY PRESEASON WITH WIN
LYNX 68, SUN 57
The Minnesota Lynx began their 2008 preseason schedule by defeating the Connecticut Sun 68-57 Thursday afternoon at Target Center. Minnesota's first round draft pick (third overall) Candice Wiggins recorded a game-high 18 points to lead the way for the Lynx. Fellow 2008 draft picks Nicky Anosike and Charde Houston each made their presence felt. Anosike nearly tallied her first career double-double, falling just one point shy, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds. Houston contributed with eight points, four rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist and 1 steal. Point-guard Brittney Vaughn, taking advantage of injuries to Lindsey Harding and Noelle Quinn, debuted nicely, scoring 14 to go along with four rebounds. The Lynx bested the Sun from the field, shooting .377 FG% to .309 FG% for the Sun. The .309 FG% mark included a 2-28 (.071 FG%) stretch in the first half. Minnesota out-rebounded Connecticut 36-25 and shot .750 % from the line. The victory marks the Lynx' first in five prior preseason contest versus the Sun. Minnesota will head to Indiana next Wednesday, May 7 to battle the Fever.
