LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (8-15, 38-55) vs. POTOMAC NATIONALS (14-9, 43-49)

July 18th, 2011 -- 7:05 PM

Pfitzer Stadium

LHP Chris Masters (5-4, 3.48) vs. RHP Cameron Selik (2-6, 4.42)

THE HILLCATS: Sunday, the 'Cats beat the Potomac Nationals 5-4...Starting pitcher Aaron Shafer carved up the Nationals lineup holding them scoreless through seven...Meanwhile the offense provided five runs of support, Marcus Lemon hit a solo shot in the third, Barrett Kleinknecht added a sac-fly in the sixth, and Joey Terdoslavich cleared the bases with a three RBI double in the seventh...The bullpen nearly blew the lead in the eighth and ninth...Closer Ryan Buchter allowed the winning run to reach second base in the ninth inning before striking out Jeff Kobernus to end the game...The Hillcats currently sit in fourth place in the Northern Division at 8-15, 6.0 games back of the Potomac Nationals...

VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 8-5 against the Nationals this season...They last met in Lynchburg last weekend, where in the series finale the Nationals fell behind 8-1 after three innings but went on to win the ball game 11-10...Potomac nearly erased a five-run deficit in the last two innings last night but the Hillcats were able to hang on, stranding the winning run at second in the ninth...Lynchburg has now won the last five meetings at Pfitzner Stadium...The road team is 10-3 in the season series...Last year, Potomac took the season series 11-8 from Lynchburg...The former Braves Advanced-A affiliate, Myrtle Beach, fared even worse dropping 14 of 20 to the Nationals last year...

PLAYING SHORT-HANDED: Lynchburg left for Potomac yesterday morning with two key components of their roster...OF Adam Milligan and INF Joe Leonard stayed back in Lynchburg and won't be available for this series...Milligan who has spent two stints on te disabled list already this season, was scratched from the lineup card late Saturday evening due to pain in his knee...Leonard spent Friday night in the hospital after complaining about chest pains and was not available to play Saturday...The Hillcats have not put either on the DL as of Monday morning, and are currently playing with 10 position players, two catchers, four infielders, and four outfielders....

BY AN INCH OR BY A MILE: The Hillcats nearly squandered another big lead to the Nationals last night...In a rematch from last Monday's 11-10 game, in which the Hillcats blew an 8-1 lead, Potomac's RHP Paul Demny and Lynchburg's RHP Aaron Shafer were back on the mound...Again Shafer out dueled Demny, lasting seven and two-thirds innings and leaving with a 5-0 lead that turned into a 5-2 lead by the end of the eighth...LHP Ryan Buchter entered the game in the ninth (also reminiscent of Monday), however this time he had a three-run lead to work with instead of a tie score...Buchter, who had given up two runs in a single appearance just once in 15 chances this season (the only time last Monday), again surrendered a pair but went on to strike out the side the long way hanging on for his eighth save in eight tries this year...

BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes C Christian Bethancourt (12), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...

TWO BAGS ARE BETTER THAN ONE: INF Joey Terdoslavich smacked his league leading 34th double of the season last night with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh...The two-bagger cleared the bases and turned out to be the game winner putting the Hillcats up 5-0 (they held on to win 5-4)...He has now put eight doubles between him and Winston-Salem's Ian Gac who holds the second-most with 26...He has doubled in four of his last five games with only one other hit in that span, a single last night...

SIMMERING HOT JULY: After posting his season worst statistics in June, SS Andrelton Simmons has been on fire so far in July...He has hit safely in 14 of 15 July contests with seven multi-hit games and is currently on a eight game hit-streak...He's hitting .362 with eight runs scored and three runs driven in this month after posting a season-worst .258 clip in the month of June...

FOR THE FIRST TIME: Somehow through thirteen contests this season between the Nats' and 'Cats, tonight's starting pitcher for the Hillcats, Chris Masters, has yet to face Potomac...Masters has been healthy all season long...He's made five appearances out of the pen and 14 starts, but has managed to dodge the Nats each time around...So far in his first appearances against the other six teams in the league, he has allowed a combined six earned runs in 26 innings pitched, good for a 2.08 ERA...

TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Cameron Selik was selected in the 22nd round of the 2010 draft by the Nationals out of the University of Kansas...Started the 2011 season with Low-A Hagerstown...Went 3-0 with a 0.31 ERA in five starts...Earned South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week on April 25...Faced Lynchburg once this season...On May 29, took loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits in five and two-thirds innings pitched...Currently 2-6 with a 4.42 ERA...
